Catherine of Siena became more than a theologian and doctor of the Church to me. She transformed into a friend and mentor
Dear John, Today we celebrate the life and example of St. Catherine of Siena. I have a special affinity for St. Catherine of Siena. About 20 years ago, I spent a weekend in Siena with my uncle, Msgr. Frank Bognanno. He is well-versed in the life and impact of St. Catherine of Siena and was an excellent tour guide. I especially remember a moment when we were leaving Mass, I confided in him how I was searching for God's will in my life. He told me to entrust my year in Italy to St. Catherine of Siena. And, to do this more concretely I should say a simple prayer each day at Mass after receiving the holy Eucharist. I took his advice to heart. For that entire year, each day at Mass, I knelt after receiving the holy Eucharist, and with the guidance of St. Catherine, I prayed this simple prayer: God, keep my heart, mind, and soul open to your will. Now, 20 years later, I cherish the spiritual formation of that year in Italy. St. Catherine of Siena became more than a theologian and doctor of the Church to me. She transformed into a friend and mentor as I embarked on my adult spiritual journey. Learn more about her life and the lives of other inspiring modern saints!
