Eight minutes later the procession reached the west gate of Westminster Abbey and the coffin, topped with the Imperial State Crown, was carried into the thousand-year-old church. Among the 2,000 attendees were around 100 presidents, 20 monarchs and all of Britain’s surviving former prime ministers. The hour-long service was ongoing at the time of writing. | | Back to the Grindstone | After Recent Successes, Ukrainian Advance Slows Again “Perhaps it seems … that after a series of victories we have a certain lull,” said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy Sunday. “But this is not a lull. This is preparation for the next sequence.” After the lightning advances enjoyed by Ukraine in the northeast, it’s now business as usual with Kyiv inching forward in the east and south and Russia continuing to bombard the strategic city of Bakhmut. One worrying development for Zelenskyy is the addition of Iranian-made drones to Moscow’s arsenal. “It was not like artillery that hit us before,” said Capt. Volodymyr Danchenko. “I haven’t met something like this before.” (Source: NYT) |

| | Extreme Weather | Fiona and Nanmadol Wreak Havoc in Puerto Rico, Japan Five years after the devastation of Hurricane Maria, Fiona left all 3.3 million residents of the U.S. island of Puerto Rico without power — but electricity in San Juan’s hospital complex has since been restored. The Category 1 storm, which killed a man on the French island of Guadeloupe, is now headed for the Dominican Republic. Meanwhile, Typhoon Nanmadol lashed the Japanese island of Kyushu with 100 mph winds and torrential rains. One person was killed and another reported missing. “We need to remain highly vigilant for heavy rains, gales, high waves and storm surges,” the Japanese Meteorological Agency warned. | | Take a Hike | Central Banks Around the World Expected to Raise Interest Rates Shares slipped in Asia and the dollar firmed as markets braced for a jam-packed week of central bank meetings. The U.K., Switzerland and South Africa are expected to raise interest rates by at least 50 basis points. U.S. markets, meanwhile, are priced for an increase of 75 basis points — but futures are showing a one-in-five chance of a full percentage point hike. Asked how high it could go, Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius said, “High enough to generate a tightening in financial conditions that imposes a drag on activity sufficient to maintain a solidly below-potential growth trajectory.” (Source: Reuters) |

| | Briefly | Here are some things you should know about today: “Don’t touch foreigners.” This was the advice from a senior Chinese health official after mainland China confirmed its first case of monkeypox. (Source: CNN) “The pandemic is over.” So said President Joe Biden on 60 Minutes — despite the fact that America’s daily death toll remains in the hundreds. He also vowed to provide military aid to Taiwan in the case of an unprovoked attack. (Source: CBS) “J.D. is kissing my a**,” said former President Donald Trump at an Ohio rally for GOP candidate J.D. Vance. “Of course he wants my support.” Analysts aren’t so sure: Trump’s endorsement might prove to be a poisoned chalice come November. (Source: Politico) |

| INTRIGUING | | Leg Up | These Men Wish They Were a Little Bit Taller… They wish they were ballers. And they’re willing to get both their femurs broken by Dr. Kevin Debiparshad to make it happen. The lengthening is achieved via adjustable titanium nails that are extended one millimeter every day for 90 days using a magnetic remote control. It’s agonizing, the recovery takes a year and because all the length is gained in your legs, it messes with your proportions. Still, men fork out up to $170,000 to grow between 3 and 6 inches — although the latter requires having your tibias broken too. Would Debiparshad consider getting the surgery himself? “No.” (Source: GQ) |

| | Fast One | 70 Years Later Cheetahs Return to India — But Experts Are Divided Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated his 72nd birthday Saturday by releasing eight radio-collared cheetahs, which had been flown 5,000 miles from Namibia, into Kuno National Park. The cheetah went extinct in India in 1952, and S.P. Yadav of the National Tiger Conservation Authority said it’s “our moral and ethical responsibility to bring it back.” But others say this misses the point: African cheetahs aren’t the same as the Asian subspecies that’s now only found in Iran. Besides, the park is unfenced and biologist Ullas Karanth says “they’ll be knocked out within six months” by domestic dogs and leopards. (Source: Reuters) |

| | | Nyege Nyege | Ugandan Festival’s a Sellout, Despite Attempted ‘Immorality’ Ban Around 12,000 people have descended on the Itanda Falls for the four-day Nyege Nyege music festival. Politicians had threatened to ban it as a “breeding ground for sexual immorality” and homosexuality. But when organizers vowed there’d be no orgies, nudity or vulgar language it was allowed to proceed. Revelers included Uganda’s Deputy Prime Minister Rebecca Kadaga and an estimated 5,000 foreign visitors. British tourist David Kempson said he’d never heard of Nyege Nyege until the attempted ban: “It is my first time in Africa. I didn’t expect this much, the huge fan presence, the greenery, the waterfalls and hospitality.” (Source: BBC) |

| | Snail Trail | German Customs Officials Confiscate 93 Giant African Land Snails When officials at Düsseldorf Airport spotted an 8-inch snail on a baggage truck they first thought it was a toy — until it started moving. They then kicked into detective mode, following the slime trail to a bag with another snail peeping out of an opening. Before long they’d seized 93 snails, 62 pounds of fish and smoked meat, and a suitcase of rotting meat, all imported from Nigeria. “Never in the history of the Düsseldorf customs office has a trail of slime led us to smuggled goods,” said spokesman Michael Walk. The snails were sent to an animal rescue service. (Sources: Economic Times, AP) |

| | Aces High | ‘Chokers’ No More: Las Vegas Claims First WNBA Title The Aces shook their reputation for dominating the regular season — finishing first or second the past three years — but choking in the playoffs. Sunday night they took the Finals with a seesawing 78-71 win over the Connecticut Sun. Finals MVP Chelsea Gray scored the most with 20 points, but it was Riquna Williams who sealed the win with 11 points in the fourth quarter and 17 in total. “What I’m most proud of is we became a real team out here,” said coach Becky Hammon, who was named WNBA coach of the year. “A team that cares about each other and trusts each other.” (Source: NYT) |
