GOP takes control of Louisiana government

BY JESSICA WILLIAMS | Capitol News Bureau Editor

GOP runs government: Republicans assumed total control of statewide elective offices on Saturday after GOP candidates won the seats of attorney general, secretary of state and treasurer, James Finn and Meghan Friedmann report. See election results.

Constitutional changes: Louisiana voters on Saturday agreed to create property tax exemptions for first responders, change the Legislature's veto override rules and make other changes, Friedmann reports. But they rejected a plan to restrict lawmakers' access to a state emergency fund.

Jailed youth: Youth prisoners at a north Louisiana jail, three of whom were recently removed from a youth lockup at the State Penitentiary at Angola, attempted a violent escape last week, James Finn reports. This state senator says the teens should never have left Angola.
