The front page of The Canberra Times on this day 52 years ago carried a small report about the "life-giving" powers of a Manchester bakery's particular aroma. Nine months after a bakery introduced a new secret ingredient, six babies, including twins, had been born in eight days in the same street as the bakery. The bakery was set to investigate, but disclaimed responsibility. "We are very keen on productivity but we couldn't have foreseen this. We shall have to examine the ingredients more closely," a spokesman for the bakery said. Jean Hammond, 20, one of the mothers, said: "The smell really makes you feel good." READ MORE
