Ford Model Ts to pack Northern Michigan park for car show |
Cadillac will be an antique car lovers dream when more than 250 Ford Model Ts roll into town starting this weekend for the Model T Ford Club International 67th Annual Tour. The tour, scheduled for July 13-20, will be based in Cadillac for the first time and is returning to Michigan after 17 years away. Participants can enjoy a car show, fashion show, food trucks, music and more during the event. While you're traveling this weekend, be mindful of these 60 road closures scheduled for Friday, July 12, through Sunday, July 14. That’s in addition to several ongoing projects that started earlier this summer. |

Gov. Gretchen Whitmer wants to meet those who plotted to kidnap her |
Gov. Gretchen Whitmer hopes to eventually meet and talk face-to-face with one of the men who pleaded guilty in the conspiracy to kidnap her. Fourteen men were charged in the 2020 plot to kidnap Whitmer from her summer home in Antrim County’s Elk Rapids. According to trial testimony, the plot involved then moving Whitmer to a secure location in Wisconsin, where she would face a “trial” for treason and possible execution. In the running: U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib is seeking another term in Congress. The Detroit Democrat is running to represent Michigan’s 12th Congressional District for another two years and faces no opposition in the Aug. 6 primary. But two Republicans — James Hooper and Linda Sawyer — are competing on the GOP ticket for a chance to take on Tlaib in the heavily Democratic district in November. Campaign trail: President Biden’s planned campaign visit to Detroit on Friday, July 12, comes 16 days after a highly scrutinized debate that caused some top Democratic lawmakers to publicly question whether the president should step down as a candidate. Among them was a Michigan member of Congress, U.S. Rep. Hillary Scholten, D-Grand Rapids. |

Beryl brought record-breaking rainfall to some Michigan cities |
Downpour: Daily rainfall records were broken in some Michigan cities Wednesday as remnants of former Hurricane Beryl moved through the area. Flint received 3.27 inches of rain, breaking the previous daily record of 1.63 inches that was set in 1970. Kalamazoo received 2.2 inches of rain, breaking the previous record of 1.07 inches from in 2017. Lastly, Lansing recorded 2.1 inches of rain on Wednesday. This breaks the previous record of 1.41 inches that was set in 2020. Michigan and tropical storm systems aren’t two things that one would think go hand in hand. With the 45th parallel - which is latitude that marks the halfway point from the Equator to the North Pole - running through the state, it’s rare for tropical systems to make it this far north. Weekend weather: It’s going to be a typical and classic summer weekend across Michigan. We may have two lines of thunderstorms on Sunday that won’t affect all of us. Walls going up on Ford’s scaled back, but still massive Michigan battery plant |
In development: Ford Motor Co. is making progress building a 1.8-million square-foot electric vehicle battery plant on a mega site in Marshall. BlueOval Battery Park Michigan is expected to create 1,700 jobs with battery production kicking off in 2026. Out of business: A Saline facility making injection molding for plastic automotive parts and components is set to close and lay off all its employees—impacting 156 people— at the end of 2024. Getting experience: Registration is now open for TeenQuest’s summer session to help young people in the community grow their skillset. The free pre-employment and leadership program teaches Genesee County teens the skills needed to get and to keep a job. |

Law passed for Nassar victims doesn’t revive decades-old abuse claims, high court finds |
In the court: A 2018 law that extends the time victims of child sexual abuse have to sue their abusers does not apply retroactively, the Michigan Supreme Court ruled Thursday, closing the door on a lawsuit brought by a Wayne County man who said he was sexually abused by a Catholic priest in the late 1990s. Feedback wanted: Flint’s history of suspicious fires is back on the front burner with arson rates rising and a rash of recent fires at abandoned schools. The city's high rate of arsons is connected to its high rate of blight. We want to hear from you about the best path forward for combatting arson in Flint. Travel and Leisure names historic Michigan island one of the top 15 in the country |
National recognition: Travel and Leisure has just listed Mackinac Island as one of the top 15 islands in the continental U.S. The popular Up North spot comes in at No. 3, just behind the Golden Isles in Georgia (Jekyll Island, Little St. Simons Island, Sea Island, St. Simons Island) and Amelia Island in Florida. On the water: The Saugatuck-Douglas area is known for its beaches, lake views and riverfronts, giving visitors plenty of opportunities to get in the water. Whether you’re heading out for a sunrise, mid-day or sunset paddle, here’s five spots you can launch a kayak or paddle board. Slow down: There is some slow-moving traffic on one of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore’s main corridors right now, and it does not need any help crossing the road. Rangers are cautioning visitors to slow down on Sand Point Road during turtle crossing season, the main stretch that runs along the northern edge of the park and leads to the park’s headquarters and Sand Point Beach. |
