Great to see young people with determination and dedication

Good evening

There was more than a little grumbling when some ‘trendy’ sports were admitted to the Olympics.

Wall climbing, BMX biking and even skateboarding were all new additions for the Tokyo Games in an effort to make the Olympics more appealing to a younger audience.

Those not grumbling scoffed that darts might be included next.

And to be fair, it does seem odd that a sport like squash has not been admitted.

The new sports may or may not have attracted a younger audience - let’s face it there are plenty of young athletes and swimmers out there who are inspired by the amazing efforts of more traditional Olypmpians past and present.

And it may be because we have done pretty well in the debut sports, but regardless of our ages, most of us have enjoyed watching the skill and daring of those young people throwing themselves around tracks in death-defying routines.

Perhaps it is because regardless of the sport, it is great to see young people with determination and dedication to succeed.
