Ballast water management experts, meeting at the recent IMO-GloBallast R&D Forum in Canada, have showcased the latest developments in ballast water management and highlighted the areas where further research is needed, in order to prevent the spread of potentially harmful species in ballast water.
The port of Tangier Med in Morocco has been awarded the certification 'EcoPort' by the ESPO. Britanny Ferries announced that during 2015 and early 2016 they have spent £60 million fitting scrubbers to comply with recent EU regulations designed to reduce pollution by shipping. In 2006, emissions containing 3.5% sulphur content were allowed but this was reduced to 1% in 2010 and has now been reduced to 0.1% in 2015.
Due to continued ice melting in the Arctic, a potential new route for shipping cargo has opened up. Analysts have estimated that in 2021 approximately 15 million metric tons of cargo will be transported using the Arctic route. China Ocean Shipping Group Company (COSCO) plans to reduce their shipping time by two weeks with the use of this route. This will benefit European countries, which represent China’s largest trade partners.

Rutter Inc.has announced that Crystal Cruises has selected the sigma S6 Small Target Surveillance (STS) and Ice Navigator™ systems for the planned Arctic summer cruise in 2016 of the Crystal Serenity. This summer's voyage will be the world's first luxury cruise liner to sail from the Pacific to the Atlantic Ocean via the Canadian Northwest Passage.
The Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) in the UK is launching a new project to design and demonstrate a commercially viable High Efficiency Propulsion System for ships which could see fuel consumption reduced by around 8%.
A new underground cavern will be brought into operation at the Port of Gothenburg. The cavern is 600,000 cubic metres in size and will be used for storage of crude oil. The operator will be the independent storage company Scandinavian Tank Storage.
SHOAL, the pan-European ICT project, part funded by the EU, has developed and delivered intelligent robotic fish capable of working together to detect and identify pollution in ports and other aquatic areas.
