A further three bodies were discovered at a nearby trucking company. Barely two hours later Zhao Chunli, who’s believed to have worked at one of the businesses, drove himself to the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office and surrendered. California Gov. | | | Forget It! | Erdogan Vows to Block Sweden’s NATO Bid A far-right Swedish politician burned a copy of the Quran Saturday. A week earlier, a pro-Kurdish group hung an effigy of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan from a lamppost in the Swedish capital. But Erdogan may have the last laugh: “Sweden should not expect support from us for NATO,” he said. As a full member, Turkey can veto Sweden’s application to join the alliance. The Swedish government approved Saturday’s protest, but not the book burning. “Sweden has a far-reaching freedom of expression, but it does not imply that the Swedish government, or myself, support the opinions expressed,” said Foreign Minister Tobias Billstrom. | | Justice for Jan. 6 | Four More Oath Keepers Found Guilty of Seditious Conspiracy A jury in Federal District Court in Washington deliberated for 15 hours before finding Roberto Minuta, Joseph Hackett, David Moerschel and Edward Vallejo guilty of sedition and two other conspiracy charges. The first three stormed the Capitol, while Vallejo sent frequent texts from a makeshift hotel-room arsenal offering to provide them with weapons. In a separate case, Richard Barnett, who was photographed with his feet on Nancy Pelosi’s desk, was found guilty on all eight charges he faced. The unanimous verdicts against these lower-ranking “foot soldiers” are in stark contrast to the mixed results of earlier cases against senior members of the Oath Keepers. (Source: NYT) |

| | The Enemy Within | Senior Ukrainian Officials Purged in Corruption Crackdown Corruption scandals used to be an almost daily feature of Ukrainian political life. Last year’s Russian invasion provided a brief respite, with officials seemingly focusing on the war effort — but a recent round of sackings and resignations suggests old habits die hard. Kyrylo Tymoshenko, the deputy head of the presidential office, and Deputy Defense Minister Viacheslav Shapovalov both quit Tuesday. And on Sunday Vasyl Lozynsky, a deputy minister in Ukraine’s infrastructure ministry, was sacked for allegedly taking a $400,000 bribe. “I want to be clear: There will be no return to what used to be in the past,” said President Zelenskyy. | INTRIGUING | | Too Little, Too Late | We Capture 2 Billion Tons of CO2 Every Year — But We’re Still Doomed A new report shows that carbon capture initiatives remove more than two billion tons of carbon dioxide from Earth’s atmosphere each year. But it warns that, even once government pledges to ramp up carbon dioxide removal (CDR) are taken into account, the Paris Agreement goals remain out of reach. Meeting them depends on two main factors: drastically reducing global greenhouse gas emissions, and increased implementation of new CDR techniques that go much further than simply planting trees and replenishing soil. “We need to aggressively develop and scale up CDR, particularly those novel methods,” said co-author Jan Minx. | | Core, Blimey | Why Is the Earth’s Inner Core Slowing Down? At the center of the Earth, a scorching hot ball of solid iron spins within a liquid outer core. In the mid-1990s Xiaodong Song discovered that this inner core was spinning slightly faster than the rest of the planet. Song’s latest study finds that the inner core is now spinning more slowly than the earth’s surface. The good news is that it’s probably a regular occurrence. But we have no idea why it happens or what it means. “It’s probably benign, but we don’t want to have things we don’t understand deep in the Earth,” said geophysicist John Vidale. (Source: WaPo) |

| | | World Without Warcraft | Chinese Gamers Heartbroken as Popular Games Go Offline A dispute between U.S. developer Blizzard and Chinese publisher NetEase caused titles including World of Warcraft, Overwatch and Hearthstone to go offline at midnight. NetEase’s Simon Zhu — who said he’s spent 10,000 hours playing WoW — put out a damning statement: “One day, when what has happened behind the scene could be told, developers and gamers will have a whole new level of understanding of how much damage a jerk can make.” Blizzard meanwhile tried to characterize the breakup as not “the end” but just a “temporary unhappy suspension.” One longtime fan said “the two companies have taken players hostage.” (Sources: AFP, Sky News) |

| | The Lights Are On … | But Nobody’s Home at Massachusetts School Since August 2021, Minnechaug Regional High School’s had an unusual problem: the lights are either all on, or all off. The issue started with the crash of a computer program designed to save power — and it’s taken this long to (almost) solve it. The school’s already spent around $75,000 on replacing lighting panels and servers — all that remains is for the software to be updated. This was planned for December but has been rescheduled for February. “And yes, there will be a remote override switch so this won’t happen again,” said Paul Mustone, the new head of the company responsible. | | The Netflix Curse? | Stars of ‘Break Point’ Tumble at Australian Open Of the 10 players featured in Netflix’s behind-the-scenes tennis documentary, three were forced to pull out before they’d even hit a ball — and not a single one made it through to the second week. Women’s world No. 2 Ons Jabeur suffered a shock second-round defeat to Markéta Vondroušová, ranked 86. Other Top 10 players to fall to the curse included Casper Ruud, Taylor Fritz, and Maria Sakkari. Sixth seed Félix Auger-Aliassime, who lasted longer than most, shrugged off the curse ahead of his fourth-round tie. But then lost to Jiří Lehečka, who hadn’t won a single grand slam match before this tournament. (Source: The Guardian) |
