TOP OF THE AGENDA | Hamas says US plan lacks key demands |
|
| | Almost 4,000 people have been killed in Gaza over the past 10 weeks, according to the Hamas-run health ministry. Credit: Reuters | A Hamas official said a US ceasefire proposal did not satisfy core demands, including an end to the war, but the group was still considering the proposal and would respond in due course. The White House said on Thursday that Israel had "signed off" on the plan and that it was waiting for Hamas's response. According to Israeli media, the deal would see Hamas hand over 10 living hostages and the bodies of 18 dead hostages in two phases in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire and the release of Palestinian prisoners. A previous two-month ceasefire collapsed in March when Israel imposed a total blockade on Gaza and resumed its military offensive. The blockade was recently eased, but humanitarian groups are calling for more aid to be allowed into the territory. |

Security breakdown: Looting has been reported in north Gaza's main city, where Palestinians are desperately searching for food and aid is difficult to access. Watch: BBC Verify has examined footage of the chaos that unfolded at one of the aid distribution sites managed by the controversial Gaza Humanitarian Foundation earlier this week.

| BEYOND THE HEADLINES | How the West helps Russia to fund its war |
|
| | | Proceeds made from selling oil and gas are key to keeping Russia's war machine going. Credit: Getty Images | Data analysed by the BBC show that Ukraine's Western allies have paid Russia more for its hydrocarbons than they have given Ukraine in aid. Campaigners say governments in Europe and North America need to do more to stop Russian oil and gas from fuelling the war with Ukraine. |

And finally... | Banksy has unveiled a new piece of graffiti art, which has been traced to a street in the French city of Marseille. Pictures posted on the street artist's Instagram show a bollard with a shadow drawn on the pavement behind it, leading to a wall where a lighthouse has been stencilled along with the words: "I want to be what you saw in me". Take a look.
