Elsewhere in the memoir, Harry reveals his father also shared his plans for a reduced royal role with the tabloids, which is what ultimately resulted in his seemingly abrupt, late-night announcement to take a step back from the institution, along with wife Meghan Markle, in 2020.

Harry was on tour with Meghan in South Africa in 2019 when he said Cape Town "would be an amazing place for us to base ourselves".

Months later, in a new book, with excerpts published by none other than the Daily Mail, the queen's secret plan for the couple's move to South Africa would be revealed.

But things didn't quite go as planned as negotiations began at Sandringham, following the couple's January 2020 exit – and Harry confirms, with the use of codenames, things unravelled no thanks to a few senior members of the firm, and others guiding the queen.
