And the consequences of a cybercriminal grabbing our key information are higher than ever. | Fortunately, there are a few things you can do. | “Be very, very wary anytime you give your Social Security number to anybody,” Clark says on the March 2 podcast. “Social Security numbers have become the de facto national identity system. And it’s why they’re so central to what identity thieves do.” | And if you’re old-school and still lug around a checkbook, it’s time to reconsider. In a rare case you can even get arrested because someone stole your checks and wrote bad checks, Clark says. | “Do not carry a checkbook. This is as serious as a heart attack,” Clark says. “You do not carry a checkbook. Checkbooks are like the biggest nightmare of identity theft there is.” | Here are seven other ways to protect your identity: | Don’t carry your Social Security card on your person.
