Meeting with EVP Teresa Ribera: How to make Europe’s economy stronger

BusinessEurope President Fredrik Persson and Director General Markus J. Beyrer met yesterday with Teresa Ribera, Executive Vice-President of the European Commission for Clean, Just, and Competitive Transition, to discuss key priorities for the EU’s economic recovery.

Among the important topics discussed were the upcoming Clean Industrial Deal and its crucial role in reducing the energy cost gap towards our major competitors, speeding up permitting procedures and removing regulatory burden weighing on European companies. Persson and Beyrer emphasised that over 60% of companies cite over-regulation as a significant barrier to investment. Companies operating in Europe urgently need a bold signal that the EU is serious about cutting unnecessary red tape.

While BusinessEurope welcomes President von der Leyen’s initiative to reduce reporting requirements by at least 25% (and 35% for SMEs) via an omnibus proposal, Persson and Beyrer stressed that the bureaucratic hurdles companies are facing extend far beyond mere reporting obligations. During the meeting, they shared BusinessEurope’s newly published paper containing 68 concrete actions to comprehensively reduce the regulatory burden and compliance costs for enterprises in 2025.
