I know that the love of God must have first place in my life. And when I let it slip behind any other love, there is tension and confusion in my heart. All other loves, if they are not second to the love of God, become stumbling blocks to my own growth and inner freedom. If I am to be free, then God alone has first claim on my heart. My time and preoccupation must be with doing God’s will, with pleasing God. This lesson is learned daily, and each new love is a challenge to this simple truth: All loves are purified in the love of the God who made love.
