OZY Tribe, Elections come and elections go. In my homeland of Britain, voter fatigue was wonderfully summarized by a certain Brenda from Bristol, whose reaction to a surprise general election last year was to exclaim live on the BBC: “You’re joking! Not another one! … There’s too much politics going on at the moment.” There is a lot of politics going on in the U.S. at the moment. Yet this year’s midterms cannot be written off as just another notch in the electoral cycle. Instead, they constitute a moment of reckoning for the most polarizing president in a generation — Tuesday, Nov. 6, is likely to feel more like a general election than a midway point. With less than 50 days to go, and 435 House races, 35 Senate seats and 36 governorships up for grabs, thankfully you need only 1 thing to be smart about it all. |
OZY has launched Midterms in a Minute, a fresh weekly email newsletter with our partner McClatchy, which operates daily papers across 14 states. In one package, it gives you: Exclusive election modeling: OZY's own forecasts, partnering with the consultancy 0ptimus to take you beyond the failings of traditional polls. Key races: In-depth reporting from bellwethers across the country, including Ground Game long reads tackling issues from policing to water shortages. Rising stars: Putting you ahead of the curve with key players to watch out for. Surprise yourself, test yourself ... and treat yourself: Delicious little extras to help you get smarter, and always have something to say at the watercooler. |
At OZY, we pride ourselves on bringing together voices from across the political spectrum. Our Presidential Daily Brief has been curated by Republican Sens. Marco Rubio and Mike Lee, and by leading Democrats Nancy Pelosi and Kamala Harris. At this summer’s OZY Fest in Central Park, Hillary Clinton and conservative strategist Karl Rove both took to the main stage. And, crucially, OZY vaults you ahead of the daily trivia reported by dozens of mainstream media outlets. Here’s a taste of our exclusive reportage from this summer alone: OZY profiled a little-known progressive former bartender from the Bronx in May. Weeks later she took the political world by storm, leaving a blindsided CNN asking: “Who is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez?” Before President Trump made his Supreme Court pick, we kept you in the know with an in-depth piece forecasting Brett Kavanaugh. It’s worth another read now. When Georgia gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams revealed more than $200,000 of debt and claimed other candidates were in the same boat, OZY crunched the data — and found 244 midterm candidates in the red. We brought you the Mississippi Democrat-turned-Republican senator who’s ‘100 percent with Trump’ — and asked whether that’s enough. And we profiled an empty chair to highlight the growing chasm between big tech, politicians and the people. And finally: OZY serves up politics on TV and podcast too. Our 12-part Breaking Big series, on PBS and Facebook Watch, went in-depth with Democratic Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and country music star Jason Aldean, among others. Our new season of The Thread podcast is exploring nonviolence, with politics inevitably intertwined. You’re no doubt a busy person, so it may make sense to have just one go-to place in the midterms run-up — OZY can both catch you up and put you ahead of the curve in our own multipartisan and inimitable way. Do sign up for Midterms in a Minute and other newsletters here, and as always let me know your thoughts by emailing me at managingeditor@ozy.com. With all the best to you and yours, |
