Holtec says it plans to restart closed Palisades nuclear plant next year |
Resuming: Executives with a nuclear decommissioning company say they plan to restart power generation at the closed Palisades nuclear plant next year if federal safety regulators approve the return to service. The projection came during a public meeting in Benton Harbor, where the NRC listened to a Holtec presentation on the status of efforts to restart the 1970s-era nuclear plant — an ambitious and unprecedented endeavor backed by state and federal subsidies. In politics: Republican J.D. Vance, the running mate for Donald Trump, will deliver remarks at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Aug. 7, at the Shelby Township Police Department in Macomb County. |

Cedar Point closing ride that’s been a park favorite since 1993 |
End of an era: Fans of Cedar Point have just under a month to enjoy a longtime favorite ride one more time before it closes for good. The amusement park announced last week that Snake River Falls will take its final ride on Sept. 2. More closures: National retail chain Big Lots appears to be closing nearly 300 stores across the U.S. as it continues to struggle with declining revenues. Last month, information on the company’s website revealed a handful of locations were scheduled to close in our state. As of Monday, the list has grown to include 11 Michigan stores. An opening: PickleRage has just opened its first pickleball club in the entire country in Michigan with locations in Kalamazoo and Grand Rapids coming soon, among other future facilities set to open soon across the country. |

Flint museum returns sculpture of Hindu god Ganesha because of ties to alleged art smuggler |
Sent to prosecutors: A sandstone sculpture has been returned to New York City by the Flint Institute Arts, which says the object it purchased more than a decade ago appears to have ties to a man authorities have called one of the most prolific art smugglers in the world. An update: The viewing public may have been caught off-guard when popular WNEM TV-5 anchor David Custer announced his time with the station had reached its end. Custer, though, knew weeks in advance his contract wasn’t being renewed and went on the offensive, filing a lawsuit against the news station that had employed him for 11 years. The latest: The woman who was babysitting a 2-year-old boy when he accidentally shot himself was arraigned on multiple charges. April Green, 42, was arraigned via video conference on one count of firearm safe storage violation, one count of child abuse and two counts of felony firearms. |

Simone Biles is coming to Michigan not long after the Olympics in Paris end |
Stopping by: Not long after the Olympics in Paris end, the most decorated gymnast in American history is coming to Michigan. Simone Biles will be a part of the “Gold Over America” tour, which is coming to around three dozen arenas this fall, including Little Caesars Arena in Detroit on Nov. 3. From the NFL: Multiple fights, punches, scuffles and bench-clearing scrums, whatever anybody wants to call them, were dotted throughout Day 1 of joint practices between the Detroit Lions and New York Giants. Things got so out of hand that Giants general manager Joe Schoen and quarterback Daniel Jones got in the middle of the action. ‘I do not apologize’: Jim Harbaugh maintains his innocence as Michigan reportedly faces NCAA violations relating to the 2023 sign-stealing scandal. |
