Home sale prices slumped across most of metro New Orleans in 2023, stung by high mortgage rates and soaring insurance premiums. One area in the heart of the Central Business District was a big exception. A freshly minted Louisiana State Police contingent dubbed Troop Nola is set to launch in New Orleans after Mardi Gras, with a goal of deploying 40 troopers to help police the city under a push by Gov. Jeff Landry. Just a year ago, U.S. Rep. Garret Graves of Louisiana was riding high, having helped corral GOP votes to elect Kevin McCarthy speaker of the House. That put Graves in line for a plum position in Congress, and back home in Baton Rouge, he was so popular that major Republican donors were beseeching to run for governor.
