Price drop: House prices across Newcastle and Lake Macquarie have declined in value over the three months to July. Property data firm CoreLogic says there were declines in regional New South Wales of 1.1 per cent, marking the end of two years of significant capital gains.
Local boat rescue: A whale watching boat came to the rescue of a group of fishermen and a dog off the coast of Newcastle at the weekend. Domenic May is the director of CoastXP and says a mayday call came over the radio after the vessel began taking on water.
Missing man: Police are re-appealing for information after local man Allan Bentley went missing from his Pindimar home in April 2021. It's believed Mr Bentley may have been driving a white van with New South Wales registration plates UQG 146, with the word "catering" written on the side.
Empty homes: The shadow minister for housing has described 10 homes sitting empty on the former Stockton Centre site during the housing crisis as scandalous. The homes were left vacant when the Stockton Centre closed two years ago. The opposition wants the state government to repurpose them for temporary emergency accommodation.
Indigenous Voice to parliament: The chief executive of Awabakal Enterprises, Raylene Gordon, says it's a relief to have a leader who wants to give Indigenous Australians the recognition they've been calling for.
New annual festival program: The City of Newcastle has launched a festival program which will begin late September and continue into October. It will open with the Van Gogh Alive exhibition on the Newcastle foreshore and will feature home-grown dance, music and visual artists and Indigenous workshops.
Flood-affected mining: Hunter mining giant Glencore says it's still assessing the financial hit from recent flooding, after parts of the local freight rail corridor were underwater for 12 days.
Australia Cup: The Newcastle Jets have been knocked out of the Australia Cup. The home side was defeated 2-0 by Adelaide United at Hunter Stadium on Saturday. Newcastle Olympic also took on Melbourne City this week. It lost 1-0. | | Visit our website for more local news |

| | | | | | | It's been a breath of fresh air having the sun shining brightly over the Hunter! There will be showers at the back end of the working week, but it should clear for the weekend. How good! There'll be tops of 21 degrees Celsius on the coast and it shouldn't be too cold in the mornings across the region, with temperatures sitting between 6 and 12 degrees.
Liz from Louth Park took this picture of her driveway during the recent floods. She reports being isolated for 22 days and feeling enormous relief when she could finally go grocery shopping again on Thursday last week. Liz told us taking this photo showed her there is beauty in all things and it's all a matter of perspective. But she was grateful her house remained high and dry.
