Hi John,

Consumer and small business complaints against telcos continue to plague the telecommunications industry - NBN complaints have soared. There’s no sign of the connection problems being reduced despite industry and regulator efforts to overcome the problems.

The Australian Communications Consumer Action Network says the massive rise of 41% in complaints to the TIO indicates there are systemic issues with customer service in the industry. Other organisations and vendors have also expressed misgivings as a result of the report.

Meanwhile, a new report shows Aussies are underestimating their mobile data needs more than ever, paying $133 million, or 78% more, than the same time last year.

Consumer advocate CHOICE is reminding Australians that if they're suffering "ongoing telco issues," it is possible to leave a contract without penalty, but the right steps must be taken.

The Necurs email botnet has made a return and, apart from spreading new variants of the Locky ransomware and the Trickybot trojan, also has new functionality that gathers telemetry data from the Windows desktop of its victims.

Google has a lot of tech websites slobbering over its announcement of new security measures for accessing its Gmail email offering today, with all claiming that this makes Gmail the most secure email application on the planet (if not the galaxy).

WP Engine, the leading provider for managed WordPress hosting, has opened an office in Brisbane to support what it claims is a growing customer base in Australia and New Zealand.
