Hot tech: Hackers make a coffee pot terrifying We’ve been warning that Internet of Things devices are vulnerable to hacks, but we never expected them to look like this. As part of a proof-of-concept demo, a white-hat hacker decided to hack a smart coffee machine to see how far he could take it. Shockingly, he was not only able to fully control the device but he also turned it into a dangerous weapon. Once custom software was injected into the machine, it displayed an animated devil face and started spewing boiling hot water. The machine then demanded a ransom payment — which meant the hack was a total success. Thankfully, the hacker behind this demo said the best way to stop the cyberattack was to simply unplug the coffee machine. If only it were that easy with our computers.
