1. LOYAL TO A FAULT
House Panel Moves to Hold Ex-WH Official in Contempt

The House Oversight Committee moved Tuesday to hold a former White House official in contempt of Congress for failing to appear at a hearing on alleged lapses in White House security clearance procedures. The former White House official, Carl Kline, was in charge of the security-clearance process, and now works for the Defense Department. Kline was instructed by the Trump administration to not appear at the hearing which was ordered by a House subpoena. Kline claimed his reason for not attending the scheduled testimony was that Democrats were looking for access to confidential information.

The move to hold Kline in contempt indicates an escalation of tensions between Congress and the Trump White House. The Trump administration has been increasingly resisting requests for information from Capitol Hill. “The White House and Mr. Kline now stand in open defiance of a duly authorized congressional subpoena with no assertion of any privilege of any kind by President Trump,” Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD) said in a statement. “Based on these actions, it appears that the President believes that the Constitution does not apply to his White House.”

2. CALM DOWN
Trump Flips Out at NYT, Says It Should ‘Beg’ for His Mercy

Donald Trump flew into a temper tantrum first thing Tuesday morning, this time aiming his vitriol at The New York Times. The president appeared to be flipping out after a column from Paul Krugman tore into him and the Republican Party over the Mueller report, writing that Trump “betrayed” the country and “the modern GOP is perfectly willing to sell out America if that’s what it takes to get tax cuts for the wealthy.” In a set of truly unhinged tweets, the president hit out, writing: “Paul Krugman, of the Fake News New York Times, has lost all credibility, as has the Times itself, with his false and highly inaccurate writings on me. He is obsessed with hatred, just as others are obsessed with how stupid he is ... I wonder if the New York Times will apologize to me a second time, as they did after the 2016 Election. But this one will have to be a far bigger & better apology. On this one they will have to get down on their knees & beg for forgiveness—they are truly the Enemy of the People!” The newspaper never apologized to Trump—the president appears to be misrepresenting a short letter to readers in November 2016 thanking them for loyalty and saying it would “rededicate” itself to journalism after Trump’s unexpected victory.

3. WELCOME TO TRUMP
Netanyahu Wants to Name Golan Heights Town After Trump

Israeli President Benjamin Netanyahu has announced plans to name a neighborhood in Golan Heights after President Trump. Netanyahu toured Golan Heights on Tuesday, and said a community in the strategic plateau should be named after Trump in appreciation for his decision last month to recognize Israeli sovereignty over the region. “[There] is a need to express our appreciation by calling a community or neighborhood on the Golan Heights after Donald Trump,” Netanyahu said.

Trump’s formal recognition of Israel’s sovereignty over the occupied Golan Heights sparked widespread international condemnation. Trump told Jewish supporters earlier this month that the decision was a spur-of-the-moment move. Trump said he made the decision during a discussion with his son-in-law, Jared Kushner, and the U.S. ambassador to Israel, David Friedman. Five EU members of the U.N. Security Council issued a joint statement saying they don’t recognize Israel’s sovereignty over the region, which Israel occupied in 1967. “Annexation of territory by force is prohibited under international law,” and goes against “the rules-based international order and the U.N. Charter,” they said.

4. NATION OF IMMIGRANTS?
SCOTUS Appears Likely to Support Census Citizenship Question

The Supreme Court appears poised to uphold the Trump administration’s directive to ask about citizenship on the 2020 census. The court’s conservative majority appear to be in agreement with the policy, while the liberal justices are opposed. The question, which was last included on the census in 1950, could greatly affect congressional representation for states with large numbers of immigrants—including California and New York, which tend to vote Democratic. It could also affect the share of federal dollars given to states over the next 10 years, and the 2024 presidential election. Three lower courts have blocked the plan, ruling that the question would violate the provision in the Constitution that calls for a count of the population, regardless of citizenship status.

The Supreme Court’s conservative justices do not appear to share the concern of the lower court judges. Commerce Secretary Wilbur Ross has defended the question by arguing that the Justice Department wanted the citizenship data, and the detailed information would improve enforcement of the Voting Rights Act. Chief Justice Roberts and Justice Kavanaugh, the two potential swing votes, have both indicated their acceptance of Ross’ rationale.

6. COLD SHOULDER
Trump Staff Told to Boycott WH Correspondents’ Dinner: CNN

The White House has ordered Trump administration officials to boycott Saturday’s White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, CNN reports. White House Cabinet Secretary Bill McGinley reportedly told those working within the administration to skip the black-tie event meant to celebrate a free press and allow journalists to mingle with potential sources. “We’re looking forward to an enjoyable evening of celebrating the First Amendment and great journalists past, present and future,” Olivier Knox, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, said in a statement responding to the boycott. President Donald Trump announced earlier this month that he would be skipping the dinner and opting instead to hold a rally in Green Bay, Wisconsin, the same night. “The dinner is so boring and so negative that we’re going to hold a very positive rally,” he told reporters. This is the third year in a row that Trump has skipped the dinner. The last president to skip the dinner was Ronald Reagan, who decided not to come in 1981 because he was recovering from an assassination attempt.

7. REALLY?!
Deputy on Leave for Anti-LGBT Remark After Teen’s Suicide

An Alabama sheriff’s deputy has been placed on leave after making anti-LGBTQ comments on a Facebook post about a gay 15-year-old who died by suicide, AL.com reports. The story of Nigel Shelby—a Huntsville teen who killed himself last week after he was reportedly bullied over his sexuality—was shared on Facebook by local news station WZDX. On the post, Madison County Deputy Jeff Graves reportedly wrote that the LGBTQ community was a “fake movement” and that he was “offended” by it.

“Liberty, Guns, Bible, Trump, BBQ. That’s my kind of LGBTQ movement,” Graves wrote on the now-deleted comment. “I’m seriously offended there is such a thing such as the movement. Society cannot and should not accept this behavior.” Graves also wrote that those within the LGBTQ community have “an altered ego” and a “fake agenda.” Madison County Sheriff’s Office spokesman told the website it would take “appropriate action” against Graves following a “complete audit” of his behavior. “The involved employee has been placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of the audit,” the spokesman said.

‘Deadwood’ Creator David Milch Diagnosed With Alzheimer’s

Deadwood creator David Milch has been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease, the Emmy-winning screenwriter announced in an interview with Vulture. The profiledetails Milch’s difficult years since the surprise cancellation of Deadwood by HBO in 2006. Milch, a self-described “degenerate gambler,” accumulated about $17 million in debt, forcing him to put his houses up for sale. While he was working on what would become Deadwood: The Movie, set to premiere on HBO in May, Milch began noticing Alzheimer’s symptoms appear. A brain scan later confirmed his suspicions. “As best I understand it, which is minimally, I have a deterioration in the organization of my brain,” Milch said. “And it’s progressive. And in some ways discouraging. In more than some ways — in every way I can think of.” Despite his diagnosis, the Deadwood movie was completed. The 2-hour film is set to air on May 31 and will continue the Western drama’s storyline with the show’s sprawling original cast. Milch says he will continue writing despite his new difficulties, but did not share details about future projects.

9. WHAT A WORLD
‘Swole’ and ‘Omnicide’ Added to Merriam-Webster Dictionary

Merriam-Webster has included the words “swole” and “omnicide” among the 640 additions to the dictionary this year. Other additions include: “bug-out bag” and “go-cup,” phrases that mean packing a carry-on bag with items essential for survival, and grabbing a drink for the road, respectively. Swole indicates an extremely muscular person, and omnicide translates to “the destruction of all life.” Omnicide dates to the Cold War and was used in reference to the threat of nuclear annihilation. In recent years, the term has been used to define the risk of other man-made disasters, primarily climate change.

Deciding what gets included in the dictionary involves the company’s roughly two dozen lexicographers scanning newspapers, magazines, academic journals, books and even movie and television scripts until they detect “a critical mass” of word usage that warrants inclusion. The words will be added to Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary first, before they are put in print.

Judge Temporarily Seals Video of Robert Kraft at Florida Spa

A judge has temporarily sealed a video that allegedly shows New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft engaging in illegal sexual activity in a Florida massage parlor. The surveillance video in question will not be released until trial juries have been sworn in each case, the case is resolved by a plea agreement, or the state is no longer pursuing charges against Kraft, according to court documents. Attorneys for two women who allegedly operated the prostitution ring recently claimed they have evidence that someone is trying to sell portions of the video. The massage parlor in question, Orchids of Asia Day Spa in Jupiter, Florida, is at the epicenter of a a sprawling human-trafficking and prostitution investigation involving several prominent businessman. Kraft is charged with two counts of soliciting another to commit prostitution, which stem from two separate visits to the spa.
