Plus, the conversation Sen. Mike Lee wants to have about NATO
Good morning! Here are today’s temperatures: ☀️ 53 – 89° in Logan ☀️ 66 – 95° in Salt Lake ☀️ 72 – 102° in St. George "There is something about sitting on a hard, metal bleacher on a hot August night watching high school football that feels right, even if it’s anything but comfortable," writes Dave McCann as the prep season sets to kick off across the state this week. "Hot or cold, cloudy or clear, we put up with the elements and the iron throne because we love the family members and neighbor kids who play the game. One thing is for certain, there is more shifting going on in the stands than with both teams down on the field — combined!" Read more about the many nights McCann spent in high school and college bleachers, and why it matters. Also on our minds today: Is no tax on tips actually a good idea? | Major sacrifice: How this woman’s organ donation changed a family’s life |

| | Lois Collins writes: On her 45th birthday, Monica Leger was handed a gift basket from a stranger that contained an odd assortment of items: Takis, chocolate milk, potato chips, dried mangoes, Fig Newtons, cranberry juice, candy, a keychain and a blanket that said "Henry." Leger, then a major in the National Guard, started sobbing when she saw the name. It was among the greatest gifts she’d ever received. Still, it was hard to compare it to the gift she’d given Henry, who she would later learn was a 16-year-old from the tiny town of Annabella, Utah. She gave him back the remainder of his childhood, his sociable senior year of high school, his ability to join the swim team, good health and hope. She gave him time. She gave him one of her kidneys. Mike Lee said he thinks the U.S. should reconsider its relationship with European allies because of the way the European Union has used its regulatory authority against American businesses. Lee is upset over a letter sent by EU Commissioner Thierry Breton to Elon Musk ahead of Musk’s interview with former President Donald Trump, but Lee said that is not the only reason he is reconsidering the relationship, including NATO. “To be clear, my position is we should at least consider changing our relationship,” said Lee during a phone interview with the Deseret News, adding there are a lot of considerations to weigh before making that decision.
