To tackle maternal health disparities, one MN insurer looks to doula care

Research shows that women of color and their babies face higher rates of death and more medical problems during childbirth — disparities that are connected to generations of institutional racism embedded in the health care system.
Doulas could help improve birth outcomes, especially when doulas share racial and ethnic backgrounds that are similar to their clients, said Ashley Kidd-Tatge, doula and outreach coordinator for Everyday Miracles.

Sacred in the city: Indigenous site in St. Paul prepared to welcome, educate public

Located at the base of the Mississippi River bluffs in the footprint of the Bruce Vento Nature Sanctuary on St. Paul’s east side sits Wakan Tipi, a place Dakota people hold sacred.
“This is a really, really incredibly important site for Dakota cultural history, Indigenous history in the region,” said Maggie Lorenz, executive director of the Lower Phalen Creek Project.

Two Minnesota children contract measles after traveling outside U.S. The two pre-school children developed symptoms shortly after returning from another country where the disease is common, the state health department said in a news release. The children, who are siblings, were unvaccinated, and one was hospitalized due to complications.
As temperature climbs, is Minnesota in danger of blackouts this summer? Big parts of the country are sweating thanks to early summer heat waves. The electricity grid Minnesota belongs to — the Midcontinent Independent Systems Operator — has warned Wisconsin power companies about the potential for blackouts this summer due to high demand.
Horses rescued from northern Minnesota bog. Deputies located the stuck horses and riders and started a rescue operation by borrowing multiple 8-by-10-foot wood panels from the Bemidji Fire Department and hauling them to the stranded horses using a tracked utility vehicle.
Police in the Dallas area kill a gunman who entered a summer camp for kids. A gunman opened fire inside a building where more than 250 kids and staff were starting a day of summer camp on Monday, setting off a panic that ended with a gunfight with police in Duncanville, Texas.
