A flow of right-leaning preferences has helped propel independent candidate for Bean to within a few hundred votes of toppling sitting Labor MP David Smith. Jasper Lindell examines polling booth data to track how the Liberal vote collapsed in different parts of the ACT.

Labor's thumping win nationally might be the best chance the ACT has seen in decades to finally secure funding for a new stadium, David Polkinghorne writes.

Returned ACT Labor Senator Katy Gallagher tells Dana Daniel it's easier for independents to be politically popular without the dual pressures of doing what's best for the country and their local communities.

And Planning and Heritage Minister Chris Steel has asked the ACT's Heritage Council whether it would be possible to build shop-top housing at the old Kingston shops, further delaying a decision on protecting the precinct, Jasper Lindell reports.
