Plus: Always turning on subtitles? You're not alone
| | Turning on the subtitles for living a better life |

"Hey Google. How do I…" It's one of the most searched terms on the internet, and for good reason. Whether it be curiosity or necessity, we all like to learn something. We covered some of life's big questions in 2023, such as how much money should you give as a wedding gift? Who invented the dictionary? And how do you create new habits and ditch the bad ones? Have you ever heard of burnout? Founder of the Black Dog Institute, Gordon Parker, says it's time to change the definition, citing misplaced blame and a list of symptoms that fall short. He disagrees with the World Health Organisation definition of it as "a syndrome … resulting from chronic workplace stress that has not been successfully managed". He explains that it's not just a synonym for exhaustion and isn't always workplace-related. For some, television is a chance to unwind … but have you ever noticed dialogue is becoming more and more difficult to hear? Earlier this year, Netflix revealed 40 per cent of users turn on subtitles, while research by a British charity found young people are almost four times more likely than older viewers to watch TV shows with subtitles. So, what's going on? RN Breakfast explored this, and revealed it's all to do accents, technology and the yearning for shows to sound "authentic". That's all from us for now.
