Deseret News reporter Samuel Benson visited one of its shelters in McAllen, Texas, and spoke with the nun who leads its operations. He also met a number of migrants, including one father from Haiti who hopes to bring his family to Utah because it topped a Google search of “most friendly state to immigrants.” While some officials have praised the charity’s work, not all see it that way. Recently, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has attempted to curtail the work of faith-based groups in south Texas, accusing some of “human smuggling” and “worsening illegal immigration.” Read more about how Catholic Charities is withstanding legal challenges and “restoring human dignity.” Also on our minds: Utah’s strategies amid the growing national student debt crisis Jimmer Fredette seeks out medical attention during Olympic game Columnist LaVarr Webb bids farewell after 21 years of writing |

And with Reno being the seat of the perennially purple Washoe County, which has often tipped the balance in the Silver swing State, few places will have as much say as to what is done to address these issues at the federal level. “To the rest of the country, this is where the White House will be won and the Senate will be taken back,” Republican Senate candidate Sam Brown told supporters on Tuesday. “We are the battleground of the nation.” Read more about Nevada’s influence on this year’s elections. | Agriculture is responsible for about 10.6% of greenhouse gas emissions in the United States. Cattle in particular are a concern, as their burps and manure release a fair amount of methane gas. Farmers and ranchers across the nation, including here in Utah, are adopting ways to minimize those releases. Mitch Hancock, a Corinne dairy farmer, knows all too well about the challenges of dairy farming and is working on solutions. He turns 90% of the manure on his ranch into compost to reduce carbon emissions and help eliminate the need for costly fertilizer.
