May 1 is International Workers' Day, except in the US and what other country, which instead celebrate the workers officially on Labor Day on the first Monday in September?
I remember learning how to make lei at the kitchen table of my grandparents’ home in Lahaina. My cousins and I would go out to Grandma’s plumeria trees in the front yard and pick the blossoms for the lei. We filled our baskets with the fragrant red, yellow and white flowers. Then, we trooped back into the house where Grandma had set us up with snacks -- crack seed and Tang -- and her long lei-making needles. We sat there eating and stringing lei, while the aunties and uncles cooked, laughed and talked story. As day turned into night, we stored our lei in the refrigerator and everyone drifted outside for kanikapila. I share that memory because today is Lei Day, a yearly tradition that began in 1927 to honor the Hawaiian practice of making, giving and wearing lei. People in Hawaii, and in many cities around the country, will celebrate the day with parades, hula and music, lei-making demonstrations, presentation of the royal courts (the Lei Court) and more. I can’t think of a better way to kick off Asian American Pacific Islander heritage month. As in years past, I will share memories, resources, recipes and more in celebration of these rich cultures.
