Facebook has truly become a powerful marketing tool that caters to businesses of all shapes and sizes. As an artist, you can utilize the social media platform to systematically tell your story to a very broad audience. It's appealing to visual artists especially, because visual content tends to draw in more visitors.

Having a Facebook Business Page is a cost-effective way to ramp up your online presence and build deeper, and more thoughtful relationships with potential customers.

Over the last several weeks, I've been dissecting our recent amp webinar series that details the intricacies of effectively using Facebook in your marketing plan. Click here to catch up now.

This week I will discuss how you can create the perfect Facebook posts for your Business Page.

To maximize the effectiveness of your page, your posts should be carefully crafted and well thought out. Determine the content that you can share that will best align with the following goals:

  • Capture your followers' attention so they stop scrolling and pay attention to your post
  • Deepen your connection with your audience by sharing your Artist Now story in a genuine and open way
  • Get your audience to take an action, which turns a monologue into a conversation and makes your audience feel like a part of the story. Examples of action include liking, commenting or sharing your post, and visiting your artist website.

Your posts should include a variety of content but ultimately be centered around telling stories to build an emotional connection with your audience.

Below are a few content ideas that can help to get you started:

1. You can feature the progression of a piece of work that you're working on from beginning to end. This can include the creative process as you work in the studio that features you and your art.

2. Sharing the range of a series of artworks that you are currently working on, how they relate to one another, and inspiration behind the series and each individual piece.

3. The story of an art related event that has either already occurred, is currently ongoing, or is set to happen in the future.

Regardless of the story you tell, your art is the vehicle that you should use to tell it!

In addition to focusing on creating posts that resonate with your audience, it's important to structure your post in a way that will make it easier for your followers to read and engage.

You can use the below sample as a guideline to help craft your next post:

1. A short sentence that captures the attention and generates audience interest enough to stop scrolling to read and engage with your post.

2. Three short paragraphs where you share your Artist Now story. The structure of these three paragraphs should be in narrative structure - i.e. beginning, middle, and end and should be short and concise.

3. One short paragraph that entices your audience to take action. This action should be related to the story that you are sharing and simple enough to accomplish so you avoid generating cognitive overload and triggering their flight response.

Now that you know exactly how to structure the copy in your posts, you can focus on incorporating images into your post for maximum effect.

Here is a list of the different types of art images to use:

  • Images of just your artwork that are cropped to the right size for a Facebook post (see below for correct dimensions)
  • Images of your artwork on an easel that also show a portion of your work area (studio or in plein art)
  • Images of your artwork and you either working on the piece or standing next to it
  • Images of your artwork and small groups of people where the people are standing in front of or to the side of your artwork

Regardless of the type of image you pick, your artwork must remain the focus!
