Plus: Celebrating 100 years of Australian radio
| | Having trouble falling asleep? There could be a evolutionary reason for it |
|
A bad night's sleep is something that bedevils most of us at some stage in our lives. Whether it's worrying about our families, money or that work conversation that went awry, staring at the ceiling at 4am is no fun. But trying to force yourself to fall back to sleep is making things worse. Dr Rafael Pelayo told ABC RN's Life Matters that it's futile to try to "turn off" your brain when trying to get to sleep, which is something patients often tell him they focus on. It's one of the many sleep myths he said were getting in the way of a good night's sleep. Yet even if you are a perpetual insomniac, there is some good news. He says: "If you've ever slept well, the biological wiring for sleep is probably intact." Read more of his invaluable advice here. At 8pm on November 23, 1923, an operator at radio station 2SB pressed a button and radio in Australia was born. Eventually 2SB became our sister station ABC Radio Sydney and there have been countless highlights ever since that momentous day. Recently ABC RN's The Music Show celebrated the centenary with a live audience at the National Film and Sound Archive of Australia (NFSA) in Canberra. Listen here to an expert panel discuss the many ways music and radio have influenced each other over the last hundred years, and to some of those highlights including recordings of the award-winning documentary The Death of a Wombat, featuring the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, a 1941 concert in a cave in Tobruk during World War II and the 1973 opening concert at the Sydney Opera House. Enjoy! Have a great weekend, Alexandra Spring, acting RN Editor Enjoy getting ABC RN in your inbox? Invite your friends to sign up too! |
