![]() You know how RuPaul signs off with “If you can't love yourself, how in the hell you gonna love somebody else?” on “Drag Race”?
I love that advice, but the fact of the matter is, a lot of us who struggle with low self-esteem still end up in relationships. And a lot of others fall in love with partners who don’t fully love themselves. So how do you overcome these issues when you’re coupled up? Here’s what marriage therapists told me recently.
ICYMI: Writer Tammy Rabideau is single and wants to find love but she often hesitates to say “yes” to dates. That’s because she has body dysmorphic disorder and her anxiety is quick to kick in on dates. Still, recently she put her reservations aside and agreed to go to dinner with a man named Jordan. The date was going great until Jordan made a not-so-funny joke about Rabideau’s appearance.
“Wow, good thing you don’t have anything in your teeth,” he said while she was busy laughing, “because your teeth stick out so much it’s like, ‘Whoa.’”
