Terrible fires are still continuing to blaze across Australia. While the devastation is unprecedented and the recovery work ahead is immense, we're deeply touched by the incredible support each and every one of you have shown us.

Here is an update on how WWF-Australia is working on the ground to protect people and wildlife, made possible by your generous contributions.

Urgent care for injured wildlife

The help of our supporters has allowed us to work with many wildlife rescue groups. We’re also helping to carry out emergency assessments of fire-affected areas to search for any surviving wildlife that may need treatment.

THE PROJECTS WE'RE FUNDING

Koala detection dogs

Thanks to your urgent donations and online furniture retailer Koala, WWF-Australia has been able to hire koala detection dogs Taz and Missy. These dogs are trained to sniff out koala poo, which helps them discover surviving koalas! When they find koalas, the team assess them to see if they need further care.

Food drops for wildlife

Your support has also allowed us to provide crucial funds to Wildcare, who are providing food drops to support remaining wildlife in Tallaganda National Park in New South Wales. Donations are also helping with medical supplies and vet expenses.

ASSESSING THE IMPACT ON SPECIES

Donations are being used to conduct two rapid threatened species assessments within fire-affected areas. These assessments will help find out which species have been lost, which require urgent recovery interventions, and which species, once believed to be common, are now likely to be listed as vulnerable, threatened or endangered. We will use this information to call on governments to prioritise similar assessments across all fire-affected areas.

As the fires continue to ravage Australia, we will keep helping partners to respond to emergencies within fire-affected areas, as well as ensure there are long-term plans and actions to restore what has been lost.
