The Wake Up

FRIDAY, SEPT. 30, 2022

We know abortion will decide votes in the November election. We just don’t know how many. So while polls have been wrong in recent years, we still consider them as part of our campaign analysis. Just like we look at voter registrations, early ballot requests and returns, fundraising, ad spending and more.

As we prepare to enter October, the Senate race between Democrat Tim Ryan and Republican J.D. Vance could grow more heated, and more divided by gender.

Gender divide: A gender gap is playing what appears to be a key role in Ohio’s surprisingly competitive race to replace outgoing Republican U.S. Sen. Rob Portman. The dynamic points to women as a key bloc of potential swing voters in the race – and also may offer clues about how abortion may factor into the Nov. 8 election, reports Andrew Tobias. A Siena College/Spectrum News poll found Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan holding a big lead among women voters over J.D. Vance, the Republican nominee, who holds a significant lead with men.

New jail: The Justice Center Executive Steering Committee will meet Tuesday to vote on whether Cuyahoga County’s preferred location for a new jail is acceptable, reports Kaitlin Durbin. The committee’s recommendation is supposed to help inform Cuyahoga County Council’s decision whether to buy 2700 Transport Road for $20 million with the purpose of building a new jail there. Meanwhile, county executive candidates Chris Ronayne and Lee Weingart issued letters this week calling for council to pause jail planning, suggesting there are better options than the proposed $750 million, 1,900-bed facility at a potentially toxic site.

Cleveland’s Promise: Light fixtures droop from the ceiling at Grace’s house, exposing live wires. Holes in the walls recess so deep you can see the house’s studs. The kitchen outlet next to the sink swings sideways, tempting disaster from the nearby splashing water. Hannah Drown writes in the Cleveland’s Promise series that she struggles to accept much of Grace’s family’s house.

His Porsche 911 hit a ditch and then a fire hydrant before it flipped several times.

Johnson showed no emotion and lacked any facial expression when the jury announced its decision.

Family sues: The family of a Cleveland man who died in federal lockup in Chicago has sued the government, accusing prison officials of ignoring warning signs leading up to his death by suicide. Mika O’Toole, the mother of Tyler James O’Toole, accused the U.S. Bureau of Prisons of knowing that her son suffered from several disabilities and that prison officials failed to monitor or treat him, even after he attempted suicide four times in custody, Adam Ferrise reports.

But there’s something for fans of all kinds of music, including country, hip hop and jazz. Joey Morona lists 21 possibilities.
