Recruiting is a murky business at best. No one ever truly knows if that blue-chip prospect will be a star or a dud, or whether that lightly recruited player will turn out to lead your team to glory. That said, it's never a bad sign at least from the start of it when a recruit picks your school over their professional sport. That's what has happened with an LSU baseball prospect, catcher Omar Serna from Houston, a potential top five-rounder who announced Friday on social media that he has withdrawn his name from the 2025 MLB draft and plans to be a Tiger in 2026. Serna's decision could potentially be great news for LSU, which is losing starting catcher Luis Hernandez after he exhausted his eligibility playing a key role for the CWS-winning Tigers this season. LSU has also had some big hits in the transfer portal as well so far. Keep up with all the Tigers' comings and goings right here with our portal tracker. While Serna's decision was a big positive for LSU baseball coach Jay Johnson, a decision Friday by the Louisiana Supreme Court was not great news for former LSU football coach Ed Orgeron. That panel ruled that Orgeron owes his former wife Kelly half of his buyout from when LSU fired him in 2021. That's more than $8 million. Hopefully for Coach O, he's saved his pennies. While Coach O certainly won't be celebrating the court's decision, some of LSU's tiniest fans were "celebrating" the Tigers' eighth CWS title and first of their very young lives in the NICU ward at Ochsner Baton Rouge. Wouldn't it be amazing if one of them grew up to be a Tiger baseball player one day? Finally, our Toyloy Brown tells us that though former LSU guard Cam Carter went undrafted this week, he still has an assignment for the upcoming NBA Summer League. Well, folks, we've reached sort of a milestone here. Baseball season is over, and now it's time to take a brief break before SEC Media Days cranks up July 14 in Atlanta. Yours truily is going to take a little down time, but you know we will continue to keep you informed of the latest LSU sports news as the summer rolls on. Have a great sports weekend, everyone, and catch you on the flip side. Scott Rabalais |
