Good Morning, Do! Today is Friday, August 2 Time to wear a bit of red to show your support for the troops! Just had a handful of raspberries fresh off the bushes. I noticed something extremely interesting! On one corner of my two rows of raspberries I have Lovage growing. Some of you may know it as Maggi. Maggi is the secret behind Maggi / Knorr soup cubes. I like Maggi. A leaf in a pot of stew gives it a slightly wild flavor. Some people like soy sauce, I prefer Maggi. The interesting aspect is that the Maggi plant seems to very positively affect the raspberries! At the opposite end of the row, the raspberry plants are about 4 - 5 feet tall, but where the Maggi is, they grow 12 feet tall! I let them arch over to the second row. And they are full of berries! Right now only about a quarter of the berries are ripe, but the rest are blushing. I wonder if anybody else has any experience with Maggi (Lovage) and how it affects their garden. Lovage is a very tough plant. I grew it even in the Yukon. From seed it takes a year or two before it gets tall, but then it is an unstoppable herb. It thrives on neglect. No need to water it. In late fall, mow it down. It will come back in spring. Have FUN! One day he was looking for a cheap wedding present for his niece, so he went into a thrift shop. As he was walking around, he noticed what was previously an expensive glass crystal vase lying in the corner. It was in three pieces. After some haggling with the owner, Fred bought the broken vase for $5. He then filled in the congratulations card, wrote out his niece's name and address and gave the owner another $5 so that the broken vase could be gift wrapped and mailed. Fred then left the shop feeling quite pleased with himself. He expected his niece to think the vase had been broken in the mail. A few days later, he called his niece to see if the present had arrived. "Yes, Uncle Fred, but unfortunately it was in 3 pieces when it was delivered." "What terrible luck!" said Fred. "The Post Office is getting worse all the time!" "It is a shame," she replied, "and it was so beautifully wrapped too...each piece separately." ______________________________________________________` _____________________________________________________ If you like the Humor Letter, please vote! DearWebby's Tech Support Pits From: Frank Re: Wireless Mouse Dear Webby, I've been using a wireless mouse for a few years and love it. However, in the past few days the mouse has a mind of its own. It stalls mid page, is erratic and sometimes unresponsive. Of course I've replaced the batteries with more than one set (2AA) and I've reset the receiver / mouse a few times. Does the mouse die a natural death after a period of time? Is something else happening? If I have to get a new one please provide recommendation regarding new wireless mouse. Frank Dear Frank If the mouse buttons are OK, then the wireless part is OK. Check the glider feet of the mouse. Chances are that they have accumulated some dirt. You can usually scrape the worst of it off, and then polish them by running the mouse roughly over some scrap paper. Have FUN! DearWebby Automatically move ALL your settings and programs. Her minister told an eighty-year-old woman that, at her age, she should be giving some thought to what he called the hereafter. She said to him, I think about it many times a day. Oh, really? said the minister. That is very wise. It's not a matter of wisdom, she replied. It's when I open a drawer or a closet, I ask myself, 'What am I here after?' As she was checking me out, my friend asked, "Have you gotten thinner?" Flattered, I replied, "Why, yes. I've been on this diet for a couple of weeks now and I've lost a few pounds." My friend rolled her eyes and said, "I meant paint thinner." ___________________________________________________ Habit I am five feet, three inches tall and pleasingly plump. Recently, after I had a minor accident, my mother accompanied me to the emergency room. The ER nurse asked for my height and weight, and I responded in a serious tone, "Five-foot-eight, 125 pounds." While the nurse pondered this information, my mother leaned over to me and said, "Sweetheart," she gently chided, "this is not the Internet." - from Ann F. ___________________________________________________ Our National Guard unit is long on officers and short on enlisted men, so lieutenants often help load trucks or do other manual labor. "Sure," he replied.
