Hydrogen safety training and events from HSE

As an enabling regulator, HSE is working with industry and government to innovate safely to prevent major incidents, supporting the move towards net zero.

Hydrogen is one of the low carbon energy solutions that will be critical for the UK's transition to net zero.

The following training and events have been designed to help those developing and deploying hydrogen technologies acquire a greater understanding of its fundamental properties and behaviour so that they can work with it safely.

Safe Net Zero 2024 - Safety considerations for materials used in hydrogen environments

Tuesday 13 February - Manchester

This one-day technical conference focuses on a key theme that many in industry, academia, research and development are keen to explore: the selection, technical performance and safety of materials used in hydrogen environments.

This event brings together anyone with an interest in the safe development and use of materials in hydrogen environments to share current knowledge and experiences, identify where there's more to do and build relationships so that we can collectively work together to enable a safe net zero.

Hydrogen: The Fundamentals

Based on HSE’s 20 years of experimental hydrogen safety research, this course helps those already working with, or looking to work with, hydrogen understand how it may behave differently to incumbent fuels and how to engineer for those differences.

The course provides an introduction to the properties and behaviour of hydrogen and its effect on materials and system design, including gas detection, purging and gas handling.

Delegates will examine the Dangerous Substances and Explosive Atmospheres Regulations (DSEAR), receive an introduction to Hazardous Area Classification (HAC) and look at risk mitigation and control measures.

Delegates will establish how to respond to an emergency, how to choose appropriate PPE and will also explore the use of liquid hydrogen.​
