As a supporter of CANSA, if you were asked to nominate the most important service your gifts make possible, which one would you choose?

For many people, the choice would be our CANSA Care Homes.

Because rural districts and small towns don’t have oncology clinics, cancer patients living there have to move to unfamiliar and often distant bigger centres for about six weeks to receive treatment. This can be an added trauma.

But as those who use them will tell you, our eight Care Homes are a ‘home-from-home’. Welcoming and comfortable, they provide accommodation with meals, as well as transport to and from the treatment centres. Importantly, information and emotional support are also freely given.

If Francina Oosthuizen was asked to nominate, she would likely choose our Care Homes. Here’s what she said about her experience there:

‘If you can imagine a quivering terrified puppy – that was me when I arrived at CANSA Tipuana Care Home. The loving welcome I received was so unexpected that I retreated to my room in tears. But I was quickly reassured and supported by better friends than I could have imagined. My fear disappeared. The food was five star. Margaret and others were never too busy to listen and help in any way. And my fellow patients became like family. I couldn’t have asked for anything more to see me through my cancer journey. May you go from strength to strength.’
