Legislation classifying Illinois dispatchers as first responders clears legislature A bill that would give Illinois emergency dispatchers more benefits and officially classify the profession as first responders could soon be sent to the governor. Senate Bill 3127 was filed by state Sen. Neil Anderson and provides that emergency dispatchers are now COVID-19 first responders. If signed by Gov. J.B. Pritzker, emergency dispatchers would qualify for extra medical benefits, mental health benefits, and extra funding for the industry. Anderson, R-Andalusia, explained during a news conference Wednesday why he thinks this bill was important to pass. "Dispatchers are there to answer the initial call on what 99% of the time is someone's worst day of their entire life," Anderson said. "These men and women deal with critical situations and they are our eyes and ears for police, fire, and E.M.S." THE CENTER SQUARE 'Be Alarmed!' Program Receives Smoke Alarm Donation The Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal (OSFM) and the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance (IFSA) received a donation of 1,000 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms from Vision 20/20 for the "Be Alarmed!" Smoke Alarm Program. Vision 20/20 partners with organizations and experts to drive Community Risk Reduction across all levels of the fire and emergency services. They help to identify gaps, evaluate and apply data-driven strategies and resources, and provide guidance in implementing adaptive measures to reduce fire and other risks. In 2021, 2,945 10-year sealed battery smoke alarms were installed in Illinois homes. The program reached 2,268 (1,027 high-risk) Illinois residents educating them on smoke alarm maintenance, home fire safety, and home fire escape plans as well as protected by new smoke alarms. 3 firefighters hurt after fire engine collides with tractor-trailer in Delaware VIDEO: A crash involving a fire truck and a tractor-trailer injured three firefighters on Thursday night in New Castle County, Delaware. It happened around 7 p.m. on eastbound I-295 at Landers Lane. Officials say a Minquadale Fire Company truck was responding to an accident when the truck was hit by a tractor-trailer. The fire truck driver lost control, hit a guard rail and then overturned. Several firefighters were briefly trapped before they were extricated. All three firefighters were transported to an area hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. Police have not said if the tractor-trailer driver suffered any injuries. Seventeen fire companies and 80 firefighters battled the four-alarm blaze on Mannering Road, just south of Euclid Avenue in the Euclid-Green neighborhood, according to a news release from the Cleveland Division of Fire. The fire first was reported at about 5 p.m. in a home on the road but it quickly spread to nearby homes because of strong winds. Along with five houses, two garages and 12 vehicles were damaged or destroyed in the fire, officials say. No cause of the fire has been reported. There were no injuries reported, but 14 adults and two children were displaced by the fire. Firefighters were able to save two dogs and a cat. THE CENTER SQUARE California: How the San Jose Home Depot fire compares to the 2002 Santana Row blaze PHOTOS: It's not every day that a major building in San Jose becomes consumed by a raging inferno, sending up dark clouds of smoke that can be seen for miles, forcing hundreds of people to flee for safety and captivating the nation's attention. So when a Home Depot store in South San Jose quickly burst aflame last weekend, many residents were reminded of one of the city's last calamitous structure fires: the 2002 Santana Row blaze. While San Jose has experienced a multitude of other massive infernos in the past two decades — including a 2010 blaze that burned most of Merritt Trace Elementary School to the ground and a 2014 five-alarm fire that destroyed a 120,000-square-foot warehouse — Santana Row remains the worst in San Jose history, ingrained in the minds of many residents. In some ways — from the building types to the size and breadth of destruction — the Santana Row and Home Depot fires are quite different. But stories told by residents feature sobering similarities.
