Little Village fire leaves 1 dead, 4 displaced, Chicago police say A 53-year-old man was killed after a fire broke out in a home early Friday in Little Village on the Southwest Side. Firefighters responded to a call of a blaze at a home just after 3 a.m. in the 2600-block of South Harding Avenue, Chicago Fire officials said. The unidentified man was found unresponsive in the building's attic and later died on the scene, Chicago police said. Another person was transported to a hospital with a non-fire-related issue, fire officials said. Four people were displaced from their home, according to fire officials. There were no stairs inside the building, so firefighters could not easily get up to the attic to rescue the man, CFD said. The man's cause of death is currently under investigation, according to CPD. It was not immediately clear if the building had working smoke detectors, and officials did not provide the fire's cause. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Minor jumps from window in Charleston house fire rescue A minor trapped in a Charleston home that caught fire was rescued by police. Officers Seth Brewer, James Milton and Jacob Huss arrived on the scene of the fire Wednesday afternoon at 1323 Madison Ave and found the first and second floors engulfed in flames. They reported finding a young man trapped on the home's second floor. Police ran to a window, where a Mel's Disposal employee and retired Illinois State Trooper Rory Steidl had directed the victim to go. Police helped him jump to safety and caught him. ""There's a young man on the roof," Brewer said when describing the situation. "So, without second guess I just (said to) him, 'hey, jump to us!" Police often run toward danger with no second thoughts. Milton said there are "a lot of times you have to make that decision." Another person was inside of the house but was able to escape. In regard to the child who was rescued, Brewer said he's glad that person wasn't hurt. Huss said jobs are like this one are the kind he and his colleagues sign up for. Officials: 2 injured in fire at New York home VIDEO: A two-alarm fire in Gerritsen Beach left two people injured Thursday, fire officials say. The fire started at a house on the corner of Knapp Street and Avenue W at around 8 p.m. Citizen app footage shows the fire tearing through the home. Crews were eventually able to get the fire under control and extinguish it. The back of the home was left charred and windows were destroyed. The fire department says two people were treated for minor injuries at the scene. A neighbor nearby, Cynthia Lew, says she had to put her mask on to avoid smoke inhalation. "I have never experienced a fire like this ever before and the smoke was like really all over," Lew says. Avenue W remained closed off to traffic as of 7 a.m. Friday. There is no word on the cause of the fire. WCSC-TV CBS 5 CHARLESTON The EMS and the Eldorado–an old car boosts Maryland fire company's finances VIDEO: Like all too many public service organizations, Williamsport Fire and EMS in Maryland is cash crunched by COVID. "COVID really messed with things this year," Michael Nokes, the Deputy Chief, said. Not only were funds down, but expenses went way up. "We just purchased a ladder truck, we have a ladder truck that's over thirty years old, it was well overdue for a replacement," Nokes said. They also need new equipment for the truck. The company accepts car donations, but most of the vehicles they receive are definitely end-of-life. "We use them for the purpose of vehicle stabilization and extrication, which is really great for our members to practice on." So when a couple approached the company about donating a vehicle, they were expecting another dying clunker. So you can imagine their surprise when they were presented with a 1964 Caddilac Eldorado, which had been sitting in storage for over three decades, in beautiful condition. WHTM-TV ABC 27 HARRISBURG North Carolina firefighter creates new program to close gender gap among firefighters There is a huge gender gap in the world of firefighting. Only 8% of firefighters in the United States are female according to the National Fire Protection Association. The Greensboro Fire Department wants to bridge the gender gap through a new program. Camp Spark is the department's new initiative aimed at changing the narrative to get more women into fire stations. Brittany King came up with the idea in hopes more women will climb the ladder to a career in the fire service. She's a seasoned fire fighter who recognized the lack of representation and wanted to do something about it. Just 6% of the Greensboro Fire Department is made up of women. "A big part of the reason why there are not a lot of females in the fire service is because of a lack of representation -- they don't see women like them in the fire service," King said. WFMY-TV CBS 2 GREENSBORO Big blast for gender reveal in New Hampshire rocks homes miles away It's a boy! An explosion that rattled homes within a 20-mile radius Tuesday night is being blamed on a gender reveal celebration at a Kingston quarry that police say involved more than a pound of Tannerite and blue chalk. Many residents in communities across southern New Hampshire and northern Massachusetts reported hearing the explosion just after 7 p.m. No injuries were reported in the quarry at Torromeo Industries on Dorre Road. Kingston Police Chief Donald Briggs Jr. said police are looking for those involved. "Obviously, depending on the amount (of explosives) they were using, it could be extremely dangerous," Briggs said Wednesday. Gender reveal party accidents — some deadly — have made headlines as they've grown in popularity among expectant parents over the past decade. Last year, a device from a gender reveal celebration sparked a massive wildfire in California that resulted in a firefighter's death.
