| ‘This Place Saved My Life': Chicago Firefighter Shares His Story Of How Others Helped Him Achieve His Dreams As we celebrate Black History Month, this is the story of a little boy living in poverty who had a dream to become a Chicago firefighter. As CBS 2's Jim Williams reported Thursday, that dream came true, thanks his hard work and the extraordinary kindness of men and women, Black and white, at one firehouse on the West Side. Even 40 years later, the memories are still fresh and overwhelming. "This place saved my life," said Antwan Dobson. He spoke at the firehouse on California Avenue at Fillmore Street, Engine 107. As a child, he found a second home there. "Jim, when I tell you they were there, they were really there – way beyond the scope of service that's expected of them," Dobson told CBS 2's Williams. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Bartlett warehouse fire at Access document storage facility continues burning for 2nd day A massive warehouse fire in northwest suburban Bartlett continues to burn for a second day Friday morning. Intense flames engulfed the 250,000 square foot warehouse in the 1200-block of Humbracht Circle in Brewster Creek Business Park, used by a document storage company called Access. Officials said the warehouse was stacked floor to ceiling with boxes of documents, providing ample fuel for the fire. What workers said began as a few boxes on fire grew into an inferno. "These walls are collapsing on us," said Bartlett Fire Chief William Gabrenya. "We don't want to get any of the firefighters within that collapse zone, so at this point, we're all aerials operations." WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Chicago Firefighters Rescue Man From Icy Surface Of Lake Michigan Near Hyde Park Firefighters rescued a man who was walking on the frozen surface of Lake Michigan for more than half an hour on Thursday morning, and apparently didn't even realize it. Police and fire officials said the man was spotted walking on the ice on Lake Michigan around 7:20 a.m. near 54th Street, near the Hyde Park neighborhood. A Chicago Fire Department helicopter and rescue squad responded to the scene, and used an inflatable raft to help bring the man off the ice around 8:10 a.m. Fire Department officials said the man told them he didn't realize he was walking on the ice over Lake Michigan. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Lexington firefighters grateful for help they received at crash scene The assistant fire chief in Lexington called it a "miracle" there were no serious injuries when two semis collided on a snowy roadway Thursday. He said it was just as miraculous that the plant manager for a local agriculture company was nearby with a plow to clear the snow so fire crews could safely maneuver near the crash scene. Assistant Chief Logan Weseloh said the two semi-trailers crashed just before noon Thursday at the bottom of the entrance ramp onto Interstate 55 at Lexington. One of the trucks jackknifed, while the other semi's cab was sheered off its chassis, coming to rest more than 50 feet away. HEART OF ILLINOIS Quincy home sustains fire, water damage Firefighters responded to a call at Fourth and College just before 11 a.m. Thursday, arriving to find a house with a fire in the attic. Lt. Shawn Henson of the Quincy Fire Department said the residents of the home at 704 North Fourth had gotten out safely, and the fire was contained to the attic. However, he said the effort to contain the fire caused water damage throughout the structure. Henson said crews were on scene at the fire for about two and a half hours to make sure the fire was out completely. "The ice and snow definitely makes for a bit more of a challenge," Henson said, "but the residents got out ok, and we didn't have any injuries to our crews." HERALD-WHIG PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

By taking a look back at what happened in 2006, we could get an idea of the massive cleanup still ahead at the Weaver plant. Some who lived in Apex in 2006 still have memories of evacuations and the massive emergency response. "That brought some flashbacks," said Keith Weatherly, who served as Apex's mayor in 2006. "The town manager called me and said, 'We have a serious situation. There has been an explosion, and we are going to start evacuating,'" said Weatherly. The Environmental Quality Industrial Services building on Investment Road was a fireball. There was a plume of smoke rising from the hazardous waste facility – and emergency workers could not be sure if it was dangerous. Around half the town was ordered to evacuate. MLIVE Mississippi first responders new caucus pushes for COVID death benefits and hazard pay Many on the front lines in law enforcement, firefighting and emergency response are leaving because of stress, pay and lack of benefits, especially during the pandemic. Now the state's first responders have a stronger voice at the State Capitol to improve conditions. Law officers, firefighters and EMT's were joined by state lawmakers Thursday to introduce a new caucus, a body to better serve first responders during the legislative process. "We've had countless first responders that contracted COVID and ultimately lost their lives," said MS Firefighters Association president Chief John Pope. The Collins Fire Chief said 11 firefighters in the state have died from COVID. He represents 13,500 volunteer firefighters and 3,400 career firefighters. The state does not provide benefits for deaths among first responders from COVID. I love watching videos like this one for a couple of reasons, first of all, it is fascinating to watch what these first responder heroes go through on a daily basis. I sit here in the nice, warm KICK-FM radio station blabbing on a microphone all morning while these neighborhood heroes are responding to the craziest of emergencies, you gain such an appreciation for what they go through day after day putting their own lives on the line.
