Schaumburg fire crews monitor for hotspots after massive blaze destroys business VIDEO: Fire crews continue to monitor for hotspots after a huge fire destroyed a Schaumburg commercial building Thursday night. Fire officials said Friday they will continue to watch for hotspots and they plan to determine if the building is structurally sound. It took about two-and-a-half hours to get the fire under control Thursday after it broke out at around 6:30 p.m. in a building in an industrial area on Lunt Avenue. Part of the problem for firefighters was the walls in the structure collapsed, very quickly limiting their abilities. Another issue was the building layout. "The building is separated into many different compartments so we had a lot of access issues to get to the fire from the front end or the back," said Gus Tsoulos with the Schaumburg Fire Department. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Worker dies after partial collapse of Chicago building A construction worker trapped under debris when a Chicago residential building partially collapsed has died, authorities said Thursday. It took nearly an hour for rescuers to pull the worker from several feet (meters) of debris after the Thursday morning collapse at a vacant, three-story building in the Bronzeville residential district south of downtown, the Chicago Fire Department said. The worker was taken to the University of Chicago Medical Center. The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the worker was pronounced dead. The worker's identity wasn't immediately released. Officials were investigating the cause of the collapse. Julius Hall, 43, who lives a block away from the scene, told the Chicago Sun-Times that crews had been working on the building since the summer. QUINCY HERALD-WHIG A blazing green firetruck to raise awareness in Colona The Illinois Firefighters Association has taken on a statewide and national effort to raise awareness and cut incidence of firefighter cancers. A new GO GREEN CLEAN neon green firetruck will be on display at the Colona Fire Station (401 1st St., Colona, Ill.) on Saturday, Jan. 14 at 1 p.m. They will give demonstrations on proper decontamination procedures and discuss risks that firefighters take battling fires every day. Firefighters have a 60% higher risk of dying in the line of duty because of cancer, according to a Thursday release from Colona Fire Chief John Swan, who's part of the initiative. January is Firefighter Cancer Awareness Month. Firefighters have a much higher risk of developing and dying of cancer than the general population, caused primarily by the carcinogenic toxins in smoke, according to the release. While firefighters all over this nation are exposed to these carcinogens, they often don't fully understand the extreme danger that smoke will cause. KLJB-TV FOX 18 DAVENPORT Crews extinguish vehicle fire carrying gunpowder in Zeigler Quick actions from first responders was crucial as a vehicle fire could have turned into more of a disaster. Fire crews and police responded to a vehicle on fire in Zeigler on Highway 148 Thursday morning. The vehicle was carrying multiple pounds of gunpowder. The fire was burning the interior and exterior part of the car with the potential of it spreading and igniting the gunpowder. Crews acted quickly and extinguished the fire before it could reach the gunpowder. Both police and a tow truck driver on scene tell us it was a miracle it didn't explode. The driver of the vehicle was able to escape the vehicle and the highway was shut down for a period of time while crews were on scene. WSIL-TV ABC 3 HARRISBURG Springfield Fire Department responds to hazmat fire in Springfield Springfield firefighters were called out for a hazmat fire at Solomon Center around 7:30 a.m. on Thursday. The fire department says discovered there was a small fire that was put out by the sprinkler system. Firefighters requested a hazmat response due to the large amounts of flammable materials stored in the building and the order of possible flammable vapors. Hazmat crews arrived on the scene and sampled the air and the water on the ground for possible hazardous materials to find all normal levels. One worker had minor burns on his hand. WABI-TV CBS/CW+ 5 BANGOR California sinkhole made national news, wrecked two vehicles, and is growing PHOTOS: The Chatsworth sinkhole that made national news this week when it swallowed two vehicles and led to the harrowing rescue of a mother and her daughter, was created by pounding torrential rain in the San Fernando Valley on Jan. 9. Now city crews are investigating how it happened. A mom and daughter in their Nissan, and a male driver and his passenger in a pickup truck, escaped from the dark, gaping, flooded hole on Monday night after their vehicles fell, without warning, into a cavernous gap in Iverson Road just yards from the 118 Freeway in northern Chatsworth. Los Angeles Fire Department spokesman Brian Humphrey said on Wednesday Jan. 11 that the second vehicle, carrying the two men, fell into the hole and landed atop the first car in which the women were trapped, and the men "got out on their own and scrambled out of the sinkhole prior to our arrival."
