Some Stateline firefighters and EMS pass on COVID-19 vaccine for now Illinois frontline workers, including firefighters and EMS, are among the next group of people able to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. "In the EMS realm of our business we can't escape the contact we have with patients that have either COVID symptoms or have complications because they've tested positive," said Freeport Fire Deputy Chief Scott Stykel. Some leaders find a good portion of their employees are hesitant to receive the vaccine. Stykel says 21 out of his 41 members got the shot. "We're not in a position to force our members to make that decision," said Stykel. "That's an individual decision that each of them has to come to on their own. " The City of Beloit reports 24 out of its 57 fire personnel received the vaccine with 25 expressing interest. City manager Lori Curtis Luther says in part, "As a city we would like to see higher participation in COVID-19 vaccinations. However, we have made it optional for employees and our numbers appear to be in line with other agencies." WIFR-TV CBS 23 ROCKFORD Follow Up: Space heater is suspected cause of fire that killed 5 in Des Plaines A space heater likely caused a fire that killed a mother and her four young children Wednesday in Des Plaines. That's the assessment of city fire officials, whose preliminary investigation shows the blaze started at the top of the stairs to a second-floor unit — the only exit from the unit where the family was found. There were no working smoke detectors on the second floor, Des Plaines spokeswoman Jennie Vana said in a statement. Initial findings don't point to foul play, she said. The investigation is now focused on how the heater might have ignited the fire, she said. The fire started in the two-story duplex Wednesday morning in the 700 block of Oakton Street, Fire Chief Daniel Anderson said. Four sisters were pulled from the home and taken to a hospital, where they died. They were identified as Grace Espinosa, 1, Allizon V. Espinosa, 3, Genesis A. Espinosa, 5, and Renata P. Espinosa, 6. Their mother, Citahaly Zamiodo, 25, died at the scene WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO House Fire In La Salle Subdivision Nobody was hurt during a fire that broke out on the north end of La Salle. Crews were called just after 3 o'clock Thursday afternoon about a structure fire in the 100 block of Vermilionvue Terrace. Smoke was coming from the roof of the home when firefighters from La Salle, Peru and Utica arrived. The fire was considered under control after about 20 minutes. La Salle Fire Chief Andy Bacidore says one person was home when the fire broke out in an upstairs bedroom closet. The cause is considered to be accidental. Due to smoke damage, Bacidore doesn't believe the home is livable. WLPO-AM 103.9 Faulty wiring to blame for Peoria fire Peoria firefighters responded just after 8 a.m. Thursday to the area of Graceland and Sunnyview Drive. Fire Battalion Chief Nate Rice said crews received a call about smoke coming from a home. Upon arrival, they located the fire in the attic and the interior walls. Rice said the blaze was out in less than 10 minutes. An investigator determined the cause of the fire was electrical. Two residents were able to get out of the home safely before crews arrived on the scene. Red Cross was called in to assist the residents with temporary housing. WMBD-AM 1470 Peoria firefighters tweak procedures to fight fires when faced with frigid temps Putting out a fire is a hard job to begin with, but even more so when the temperatures drop. This was the exact situation local firefighters faced as they raced to a house fire in Peoria Thursday. All occupants got out safely, but Peoria Fire Department Battalion Chief Nate Rice said firefighting in frigid weather comes with its own set of challenges. Rice said special precautions are taken to make sure fire engine parts don't freeze. "So what we have to do is make sure our valves are open…Make sure our hose lines are left open and flowing just a trickle of water to make sure we don't have lines freeze up," he said. He also makes sure to rotate his crews more frequently during cold days. "Anytime you're using water in this type of weather, you've got to be careful of the icy conditions on the ground," said Rice. The fire broke out at around 5:40 p.m., inside the Action Footwear, at 655 H Street, according to the Chula Vista Fire Department. As the first crews arrived they only saw light smoke showing from the building, according to Chula Vista Fire Capt. Linda D'Orsi, who said that four employees were inside when the fire sparked but were able to leave without being harmed. The fire was reported to have started on the second floor and was driven by the high winds that blew through San Diego on Monday. The rapidly spreading fire prompted the call for a second alarm and then, when the roof collapsed, a third alarm. WMUR-TV ABC 9 MANCHESTER Texas county officials outline actions taken to enhance environmental protections since 2019 ITC chemical fire On Thursday, Harris County officials outlined all the actions it has taken over the past two years to enhance environmental monitoring and enforcement. Harris County Judge Lina Hidalgo said since the ITC chemical fire that happened in Deer Park in March 2019, county officials have been taken numerous steps to protect the county's environment against threats to public health and safety. These actions, according to county officials, follow decades of systemic underfunding and neglect of key county departments and services aimed at protecting residents against environmental hazards, including man-made and natural disasters. "We are committed to addressing the root causes of repeated incidents that disproportionately affect vulnerable populations who live in the shadow of industry," Judge Hidalgo said.
