2 Children Rescued From Storm Drainage System In Crystal Lake Two children were rescued from a storm drainage system with minor injuries behind Target in Crystal Lake Tuesday evening. The Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department and Crystal Lake Police Department responded around 5:10 p.m. Tuesday to the area of Target, 5580 Northwest Highway in Crystal Lake, for a report of a rescue. Crystal Lake Fire Rescue Department Battalion Chief Heidi Olsen told Lake and McHenry County Scanner that firefighters arrived and learned two children, between the ages of 10 and 13, climbed into a storm drainage pipe near a retention pond behind Target. The department said bystanders initially had phone contact with the two children but they lost contact. CRYSTAL LAKE-CARY PATCH Illinois 111 stretch will memorialize late South Roxana fire chief A portion of Illinois 111 will be designated as "The Chief Todd Werner Memorial Highway" on Saturday, July 2. Werner, who died July 1, 2021, at the age of 48, worked in the fire service for 30 years. He joined the South Roxana Fire Department in 1996 and became its fire chief in 2013. Werner also had worked for the Madison County Sheriff's Office for the last three years. A South Roxana village trustee, he also was a member of the South Roxana Dad's Club and the Madison County Emergency Management Association. "Chief Werner dedicated his life to public service in Madison County by serving as a first responder," said state Rep. Amy Elik, R-Fosterburg. "He made a positive impact on the people who were fortunate to call him a friend. "Dedicating a portion of Route 111 in his honor will serve as a reminder that his selfless commitment to the community will not be forgotten." THE TELEGRAPH Multi-vehicle crash in Peoria Heights sends multiple people to the hospital At least two people were taken to the hospital after a crash involving multiple vehicles Thursday. According to a release, the Peoria Fire Department responded to a mutual aid call with Peoria Heights at War Memorial Drive and Atlantic with what appeared to be a four-vehicle crash with entrapment. One person was unable to get out of their vehicle while the occupants of the others were out when first responders arrived. The fire department says a passenger van was resting on top of a smaller car and two other vehicles had major damage to them. Firefighters used spreaders and cutters to safely get the victim out of her vehicle - she appeared to have non-life-threatening injuries. Damage is estimated at $50,000. WHOI-TV ABC 19 PEORIA Lake County camp for young burn survivors, Camp ‘I Am Me,' provides fun friendship and support From June 19-25, nearly 50 children who have been affected by burn-related injuries are participating in the 31st annual Camp "I Am Me." Hosted by the nonprofit Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, the weeklong overnight program takes place at the YMCA Camp Duncan in Ingleside. As a result of the generosity of individuals, groups, businesses and fire departments, the program is offered to families at no cost. "Camp ‘I Am Me' is a truly unique program that allows children 8 to 20 years old who have been burned by scalding water, chemicals, fire or electricity to have a camping experience in a judgment-free environment with others who have gone through similar experiences," Philip Zaleski, executive director of the Illinois Fire Safety Alliance, said in a news release. LAKE COUNTY JOURNAL - METERED SITE Springfield firefighters urge caution as Fourth of July approaches Local firefighters are warning people to be cautious with fireworks as we head into the Fourth of July. The Springfield Fire Department responds to over 20,000 calls a year. In June and July, many of those calls are about fireworks. Firefighters said they are seeing an increase in firework usage. "Over the past couple of years, firework usage at the home level has increased, so have injuries, so has damage," said Captain James Price of the Springfield Fire Department. He advises parents to keep kids away from any sort of firework, even sparklers. "Basically what we are telling our kids to do is take a sharp stick, after we light it on fire, and then... run around, it's just not a good idea," said Price. Suspect fires multiple rounds, throws incendiary device during standoff in Texas, officials say VIDEO: A standoff has ended after a suspect opened fire at law enforcement and started a fire at a property in northwest Tarrant County, officials say. Just before 9:30 a.m., the Tarrant County Sheriff's Office says deputies arrived at a home in the 500 block of Indian Creek Road to serve a felony warrant. As deputies were moving toward the home, the suspect began firing multiple rounds from multiple sides of the home, officials say. Deputies then moved into a defensive position in effort to negotiate with the suspect, and SWAT was called to the scene. Terry Rosanky told WFAA she saw it all unfold. "It sound like pop, pop, pop," Rosanky said. "They went up and evidently and approached him and he shot at them four or five times and all hell broke loose." Officials say the suspect continued to fire rounds, and appeared to drop incendiary devices on the front porch of the home – sparking a fire that engulfed several vehicles located at the property. WSBT-TV CBS/FOX 22 SOUTH BEND Firefighters rescue group filming reality show on Arizona mountain; 3 hospitalized VIDEO: A group of hikers from out of town had to be rescued on Camelback Mountain's Echo Canyon trail on Thursday. Firefighters said a large group from a women's retreat began hiking the trail around 7 a.m. with each person only having one small bottle of water. The heat became too much for them around noon so they called rescuers. Crews said the hikers were spread out all over the trail which made the rescue more difficult. First responders rescued a total of eight hikers from the mountain. Crews used a helicopter and a big wheel basket to get five of them off the trail. The remaining three walked down with help from firefighters. Three of the eight rescued, a 50-year-old woman, a 42-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, were taken to the hospital in stable condition.
