Five people, including Illinois state trooper and child, hurt in Chatham crash PHOTOS: An Illinois state trooper and four other people – including a child – were injured Thursday in a crash in Chatham. The crash happened at 83rd and State streets, right off the Dan Ryan Expressway. The Chicago Fire Department sent photos of two wrecked cars at the scene. The Fire Department said a state trooper and four civilians were injured – including a child about 10 years old. The accident victims were all taken to area hospitals in good condition. A stolen car was involved, the Fire Department said. It was not clear which of the two cars in the CFD photos was stolen. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Emmet-Chalmers Fire Districts seeking tax hike to escalate budget, tackle equipment needs Voters living in Emmet Township and Chalmers Township will decide whether or not to implement a property tax extension limiting rate for Emmet-Chalmers Fire Protection District. If passed, the increase would stagger over four years. As identified on the ballot, initial property taxes on a $100,000 home would be $43.19. After two years, taxes would jump to $56.15. After three years the tax would be $73, and $94.40 after the fourth year. ECFPD Fire Chief, David Estes, said the department's current budget stands at $30,000. Formerly $50,000, as $20,000 was used to make payments on a bond that is not paid off. After four years, he said the department's budget could potentially jump to $80,000 with the tax increase. "The taxpayers are getting a real good value for their money we feel," Estes said. "[$94] is a pretty small amount considering what we can do for them." WGEM-TV NBC/FOX/CW+ 10 QUINCY Chicago Parks Are on Fire, and That's a Good Thing PHOTOS: In a city synonymous with fire, the sight of flames rising up against the backdrop of Chicago's skyscrapers would typically raise an alarm. But the Chicago Park District has been setting its land ablaze on purpose, these fiery scenes leading to healthier natural areas. In recent weeks, the district has conducted prescribed burns at Rainbow Beach and Park 566 on the far south lakefront, two of the 15 parks targeted during a burn season that started in late November and is now coming to a close, according to Matt Freer, assistant director of landscape. These controlled fires are one of the tools the district uses to manage its natural areas, Freer said, explaining that burns knock back weeds — which lack the deep roots native plants have to withstand fire — and can help control certain invasive species. WTTW-TV PBS 11 CHICAGO Arson suspected in Mount Vernon Walmart bathroom Authorities are looking into how a fire may have started in the bathroom inside Walmart in Mount Vernon on Wednesday evening. The Mount Vernon Police Department and the Mount Vernon Fire Department responded to the Walmart Supercenter at 110 South Davidson Drive after a fire was reported in one of the bathrooms inside the store. By the time first responders arrived, the fire was reported to have been extinguished. The cause of the fire is being investigated and arson is suspected. There were no injuries reported. Police say the investigation is very active and are currently waiting to view store video and will attempt to identify the person(s) involved. WSIL-TV ABC 3 HARRISBURG Northbrook officials find more than 100 dogs and cats living in deplorable conditions Nearly 100 cats and dogs were rescued from a Northbrook, Illinois home that caught fire on Monday, and now they need homes. When fire crews responded to the house fire, they discovered 43 dogs and 48 cats living in deplorable conditions. Harleigh Garcia, the founder and executive director of Border Tails Rescue in Northbrook said once the situation was uncovered, animal control was there by 10 p.m. Crews worked until 3 a.m., she said, and by 7 a.m., animal control workers contacted Border Tails Rescue. "It was a very quick timeline," Garcia said. Border Tails Rescue is a dog shelter, so they could not take the 48 cats that were found living in the home. FOX NEWS PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO/PHOTOS: Historic prep school building in New York destroyed by huge fire The old Doane Stuart School in the area of Mt. Hope Drive in Albany appears to be a total loss, Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan said. The fire broke out Thursday evening, with all areas of the building involved. A steeple on the building has collapsed, said the mayor, with more collapses expected. Route 9W at Corning Hill is closed in that area. Meantime, it is still way too early to determine a cause. "At this point, our investigators can't even get into where they would need to be to investigate this fire," Sheehan said. She said the state will be helping with the investigation. WNYT-TV NBC 13 Related: 'We lost a treasure here', Albany mayor emotional over burned out historic property Retired Seattle firefighter teaches 'CPR for mental health' VIDEO: Mike Washington doesn't go out on calls anymore, but the retired Seattle firefighter is still fighting to save lives. "We lose more firefighters, more police officers to suicide than we do on the job," Washington said. Washington talks to first responders and veterans about stress, addiction and suicide, recently taking his message to Seattle Station 24. "As a firefighter, we get called to the worst things because that's our job," Washington said. "We signed up for this job, but no one talks about our mental health." Washington spent 32 years going to those calls and 23 years in the Marine Corps protecting his community and country. But who was protecting him? "Being brought up in the Marine Corps and fire service we were mentored by tough guys," Washington said. "There was also a lot of 'Don't complain. Don't cry about it. Rub some dirt on it and get back in there.'" IAFC.ORG Woman starts wish list to help a Virginia fire department, now the community has stepped in VIDEO: There's constantly training for members of the Petersburg Fire Department. "I don't think a lot of people truly realize how many hours a day, most of the time it's 24, that our firefighters spend at the fire station," Kathleen McCay, the owner of Petersburg's Old Townes Alibi, said. To support the three shifts of firefighters at the city's four fire stations, McCay created an Amazon wish list with the idea of going beyond the basics that the city provides. The idea caught on within the community. "To launch our wish list Tuesday morning and have already 170 some items secured and on their way, that just says the community wants to say thank you," McCay said. The wish list has both small and big items. "So, aluminum pans, aluminum foil, snacks, hydration packets, beverages, hot sauce, condiments, sides for when they cook family style," McCay said.
