Women taking the lead in Broadview, where mom is fire chief and daughter just became a police officer Women are taking the lead in a family of first responders in Broadview. A mother and daughter are protecting their west suburban town as the fire chief and a police officer. And as CBS 2's Marissa Perlman reported Thursday night, they are trailblazing a path for more females to get on the force. Tricia Scalise is now officially a police officer in her hometown of Broadview. She got a huge round of applause as her parents beamed behind her with pride. "She's fulfilling her dreams, and I get to stand there and watch it happen," said her mom, Tracy Kenny. Kenny is the village's first female fire chief. In addition, Scalise's dad, David, works for the Department of Public Works. Service to the village is a family business, you could say. Meanwhile, check out the Broadview Village Board – all women fill the seats. "History in Broadview – so thankful, and I'm grateful that you guys are on our team," Broadview Mayor Katrina Thompson told the board at a recent meeting. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Clark County votes to improve ambulance service with plans to hire full-time EMTs The Clark County, Illinois Board voted to fund improvements for its ambulance services. The project aims to hire more EMS workers full-time. The service is currently run only by part-time volunteer workers. New medics are supposed to start working full-time in 6 months. With full-time first responders, the board believes people in the area will be safer. The new, full-time medics will be able to get to an ambulance in less than half that time. WTHI-TV CBS/FOX/MYNETWORKTV/CW+ 10 TERRE HAUTE House fire displaces Peoria family A fire early Friday morning displaces a Peoria family, who now have to wait until their home is repaired. Peoria Firefighters responded to a call for a house fire near West Winnebago Drive and North Hamilton Road just before 1:10 a.m. Crews on scene found a two-story home with smoke coming from the back of the home. The wall and ceiling of the home were opened to extinguish the flames. Smoke and water caused additional damage to the house. Two adults and one toddler who lived inside the residence were alerted by smoke detectors and were able to exit the home before crews arrived. The occupants are displaced until repairs on the residence are completed. A fire investigator determined the cause of the house to be electrical. WMBD-TV CBS 31 PEORIA La Grange house fire caused by broken gas line leaves elderly woman hospitalized New details were released Thursday afternoon after a house fire left an elderly woman hospitalized in La Grange. The fire department says the Wednesday night blaze was caused by a broken gas line. The fire was reported just before 11 p.m. at a home on South Catherine Avenue. Firefighters say the blaze started in the kitchen behind a stove. La Grange police were the first on the scene, and rescued a woman in her 90s — who was trapped on the second floor. She is being treated for smoke inhalation. No other injuries were reported. WFLD-TV FOX 32 CHICAGO PREVIOUS STATE NEWS |

VIDEO: Massive fire destroys Mississippi home A home in Jackson's Belhaven neighborhood appears to be a total loss after a massive fire overnight. The house is at the corner of Pinehurst and Olive Streets, right across from Belhaven University and a few doors down from the historic Eudora Welty House. There's no word yet on how it started or whether anyone was inside at the time. WLBT-TV NBC 3 JACKSON California Community Concerns Climb Over Suspected Arsonist After 16 Recent Fires In Same Area A firebug is wreaking havoc in south Sacramento, setting more than a dozen fires during the month of May near the same intersection. Gesselle Pablo drove up on the flames and started snapping pictures. In one picture, fire lined Freeport Boulevard, but that wasn't the only one. Pablo spotted another fire a block away off Florin Road. "I think it's messed up. There's already a lot going on in this world to start this, too, especially in this neighborhood," said Pablo. What's more concerning is that there have been 16 fires just this month. They've all been right near Florin Road and Freeport Boulevard. "It's frustrating. I don't know what to do about it, though," said Chris Matsumoto. Matsumoto works at a nearby barbershop. "This is our area. We live around here. It hurts," said Matsumoto. KOVR-TV CBS 13 SACRAMENTO Lipski Legacy: Celebrating 110 years of family firefighters in Wisconsin city One family is celebrating more than a century of service to Milwaukee in 2022. The Lipski family has been serving in the Milwaukee Fire Department for 110 years. It started back in 1912 when current Chief Aaron Lipski's great-grandfather's oldest brother started at Engine No 21 off of Palmer and Lloyd Street. "First Sylvan, and then the second one was Ignatz [who] came on the job," Chief Lipski told 12 News. "My great grandfather was Henry I." In 1944 his grandfather, Daniel F. Lipski joined, followed by his father Neil in 1977. "I was fortunate enough to come on in the same fire academy class as my older brother Dan," he said. The 110th anniversary is a milestone four generations in the making. When the first Lipski started in 1912 horses were still pulling their steam engines, and there were no water tanks on board. WISN-TV ABC 12 MILWAUKEE Salary study shows South Carolina city facing high employee turnover The city of Charleston is having trouble retaining employees, especially those outside of the police and fire departments. These workers, often referred to as "non-sworn" or "civilians," are leaving at a higher rate than in years past, according to an internal survey conducted by the city. So far in 2022, 62 percent of exiting employees cited pay as their main reason for leaving. That's up from 47 percent who cited the same reason last year. The city has over 900 civilian employees. If current trends from January through April continue, the city will see 33 percent of its civilian staff turn over by the end of the year. "We've lost about 10 percent of our non-sworn employees just through the end of last month," said Ryan Landry, Charleston's compensation and human resources data manager. THE POST & COURIER - METERED SITE In wake of Surfside condo collapse, Florida Legislature passes condominium safety legislation A bill to ensure condominium safety passed both chambers of the legislature and was signed Thursday by Gov. Ron DeSantis. Within days of the special legislative session starting this week, both chambers passed bills to reform property insurance and increase safety measures for condominiums. Both bills, Senate Bill 2D, Property Insurance, and Senate Bill 4D, Building Safety, were sponsored by state Sen. Jim Boyd, R-Bradenton, who chairs the Senate Committee on Banking and Insurance. The new law will "keep Florida's condominium residents safe in the aftermath of Surfside," Florida House Speaker Chris Sprowls, R-Palm Harbor, said. It includes a "House-championed measure that requires condo associations to fully fund a reserve so that repairs and maintenance are covered and completed in a timely manner."
