Okawville Grad Promoted to Fire Chief in Highland Park Highland Park Deputy Fire Chief Joseph S. Schrage has been promoted to Fire Chief. Schrage's 24-year career in fire service began with part-time roles in three fire departments before joining the City of Highland Park in 2003 as a firefighter/paramedic. Schrage is a member of an elite group of professionals to have received the international designation of Chief Fire Officer from the Center for Public Safety Excellence and the Office of the Illinois State Fire Marshal. Promoted to Lieutenant in 2016, Battalion Chief in 2018, and Deputy Chief in 2020, Schrage has served the Fire Department in numerous capacities during his career, including as Operations Chief, Accreditation Manager, Director of Public Education, Center for Public Safety Excellence Peer Assessor, Citizen Fire Academy Director, and Hazardous Materials Special Team Member for MABAS Division 3. OKAWVILLE TIMES ‘Wouldn't have done anything different,' says one of a legion of Chicago firefighters, cops who went to NYC after 9/11 and now suffer For 20 years, Jim Maloney has carried a terrifying memory: running for his life when alarms went off, warning that a hotel might collapse near the destruction of the World Trade Center towers. He carries something else, too: an emergency inhaler. Like other Chicago cops and firefighters who volunteered to go to New York and help search for victims of the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, Maloney is haunted by what he saw there. He's also dealing with medical problems he believes were caused by breathing the talcum-like dust that blanketed Lower Manhattan like a snow storm. "I never had asthma issues before," says Maloney, who retired from the Chicago Police Department as a lieutenant. CHICAGO SUN-TIMES - METERED SITE Tragic events of 9/11 continue to inspire people to serve others in College of DuPage program A new generation of first responders is training at the College of DuPage for an event they hope never happens. Instructors say lessons learned from the emergency response on September 11th are a reminder we can never be too prepared. "I think seeing first responders, police, fire, go in while everyone is running away it's...something that I feel you're called to do," said Maegan Diaz, a Suburban Law Enforcement Academy recruit. "I think it takes a lot of bravery and courage to be in this career," said Xavier Rendonx, College of DuPage Fire Science and Emergency Medical Services Student Diaz and Rendonx are students at the Homeland Security Training Institute. Part of the College of DuPage, the center has multiple academies for firefighters, police officers and EMTs to get hands on experience. The curriculum focuses on disaster preparedness, even for those as massive as 9/11. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Garage destroyed in Rockton fire PHOTOS: A fire destroyed a home in a Rockton neighborhood on Thursday morning. Firefighters were called to the 200 block of N. Center Street at 9:20 a.m. Upon arrival, the garage and back of the home were engulfed in flames, according to the Rockton Fire Protection District. Automatic and Mutual aid was provided by surrounding fire departments to extinguish the blaze. The occupants and family dog escaped, but one kitten was caught in the fire and killed, with two other kittens currently unaccounted for. Witnesses said a man was taken from the house and transported to a local hospital. Authorities at the scene said the fire started in the garage and spread to the attic of the house, although the cause of the fire is currently under investigation. Three firefighters received minor injuries on the scene, but were quickly evaluated at medical facility and have since been released and returned to service. How the Fire Department of New York Changed After 9/11 Most of us remember September 11, 2001 as a horrific day. For the Fire Department of New York (FDNY), however, the horror stretched on. Fires around the World Trade Center Plaza, including two of the biggest in New York's history, took three days to subdue. It took three months to extinguish the smoldering fires in the stories upon stories of rubble, rubble which included more than 90 vehicles and spewed out toxins and hampered the search for identifiable remains. All the while, the FDNY was grieving the loss of 343 colleagues, including many of its officers and several of its top leaders, preparing for the possibility of additional terrorist attacks, and tending to ongoing needs of its surviving firefighters — and of the massive and complex city it serves. HARVARD BUSINESS REVIEW Georgia fire department unveils new mobile medic unit VIDEO: On Thursday, WALB News 10 was given its first look at the Valdosta Fire Department's (VFD) new mobile medic unit, which residents will be seeing cruising around. A lot of the calls the department gets are medically related, making this addition crucial to VFD's services. The unit will help reach patients in medical emergencies, wherever they are, including on rough terrain or unreachable areas. Robert Mercer, VFD special operations captain, explained that they've had the utility terrain vehicle (UTV) for a while, but the plan has always been to add this box to transport patients. Recently, with a Georgia Search and Rescue, or GSAR grant, VFD was able to make it happen. "It will allow us to transport a patient from a remote location to waiting EMS services, or a situation where maybe an ambulance couldn't reach them, or it's just difficult terrain to cross," said Mercer. Mercer said it's a GSAR asset as well and they can also deploy with it. WALB-TV NBC/ABC 10 ALBANY Frank Siller returns to NYC as part of 500-mile 9/11 walk, sharing message of heroism PHOTOS: Frank Siller had a message about heroism for the students at Blessed Sacrament School Thursday morning: It's all around us. "What do heroes do?" the CEO of the Tunnel to Towers Foundation asked the seventh- and eighth-graders gathered in the rain to greet him upon his return to Staten Island during his "Never Forget Walk." "They run toward danger, not away from it.'' Siller was referring not only to the 9/11 first responders — including his late brother Stephen — who gave their lives responding to the terrorist attacks on the United States, but to those the children encounter in their daily lives: police officers, firefighters, nurses, EMTs. "The greatest heroes of our country are the ones who serve us,'' he said. "You must thank them when you see them, because without them we don't have a society.'' STATEN ISLAND ADVANCE With Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, help is one call away for Wisconsin fire departments needing backup VIDEO: The 20th anniversary of 9/11 is now just one day away. The event changed the way crews across the country plan for and respond to emergencies, and that includes here in Wisconsin. There's one system more than 86% of fire departments use when disaster hits in Wisconsin, the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, or MABAS. When most would run away from trouble, Fort Atkinson Fire Chief Daryl Rausch rushed to it. "I've been doing this for 41 years. This is the largest event I've ever managed," says Chief Rausch. Chief Rausch knew right away that he needed help fighting a large warehouse fire. "As soon as I turned onto Main Street, I called the county and requested the MABAS box alarm," says Chief Rausch. Forty-eight different departments spanning five counties and two states all came together thanks to one emergency response tool. WMTV NBC 15 MADISON Fire destroys Alabama church group's mobile kitchen during Ida recovery efforts VIDEO: Hundreds of volunteers from across the country are in South Louisiana easing some of the burdens from Hurricane Ida. Many of these volunteers are feeding neighborhoods, but now, one group is dealing with a disaster of their own. Over the last several days, Celebration Church in Terrytown has housed a group of volunteers from Oak Park Church in Mobile, Alabama. The group brought their mobile kitchen and other supplies to make sure those in the neighborhood had a hot meal and a cold drink. Wednesday night, a major fire totaled the church group's kitchen and halted all relief efforts. Cell phone video showed how aggressive the fire was and the moments when propane tanks began exploding. Oak Park Church Executive Pastor Shane Jones said, "It is heartbreaking, but there are people a lot worse off than we are. We can replace this." WKRG-TV CBS 5 MOBILE PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
