VIDEO: Five firefighters are among six people seriously injured after a Saturday afternoon crash on the city's South Side, the Chicago Fire Department said. A witness described seeing seeing several fire trucks with their sirens blaring when another driver, instead of stopping, tried to get through the intersection at 47th and State streets in Bronzeville. "The sound was like a bomb," said Rickey Dawson. The metal between a Chicago fire truck and white Chevy Impala was left mangled together seemingly by sheer force. The front of the car caved in following a crash that sent its driver and five firefighters to the hospital. "The fire truck dragged him all the way down here," Dawson said. Dawson was walking steps away when he saw the collision just after 4:15 p.m. "He thought he could beat them, but as a result, he couldn't beat them," Dawson said.  

VIDEO/PHOTO: Multiple fire departments responded to a fire at a city-owned building near Main and Jefferson Streets in Washington on Friday. According to Washington Assistant Fire Chief Tyler Gee, the fire started at approximately 2:02 p.m., when a street sweeper appeared to have caught fire in a garage. The fire then spread to the building, and a dump truck that was parked next to it. Fire crews worked to quickly get the fire under control within 15 minutes. Washington, Morton, Eureka and Goodfield Fire Departments as well as Washington police all responded to this incident. No injuries were reported. The cause of the incident remains under investigation by the State Fire Marshal.  

VIDEO: Several families were looking for a new place to live Sunday after a fire at a South Shore neighborhood apartment building. The fire broke out around 7 a.m. in a multi-unit building at 7836 S. South Shore Dr. Firefighters arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the upper floors. The Fire Department raised a 2-11 alarm for extra manpower and equipment, and also called an EMS Plan 1 for five ambulances. Firefighters rescued a woman in a wheelchair who was trapped on the second story. The building did have working smoke detectors, so everyone made it out safely. The cause of the fire was under investigation late Sunday.  

VIDEO: A firefighter caught on fire while battling flames Saturday at a home in Brick Township. News 12 New Jersey was told he's expected to be OK. It happened just before midnight in the Herbertsillve section of the township. Officials say all residents in the home got out safely. All of Brick Township fire companies responded as well as Point Pleasant Boro and Point Pleasant Beach for coverage. The cause of the fire is currently unknown.  

Emergency responders who help stranded drivers on the side of the road are struck and killed nearly four times more than reported. A new study by the AAA Foundation for Safety reveals a disturbing picture of the dangers of helping stranded drivers. AAA Foundation researchers combed through the data and uncovered 123 roadside assistance providers killed in the U.S. by passing vehicles between 2015 and 2021, nearly four times the approximate 34 killed listed in national crash data. The discrepancy is due to inconsistent reporting in states and jurisdictions, including times when some roadside workers are identified as "pedestrians." The research also notes that while yearly total traffic fatalities increased significantly over the study period, the data suggest that roadside assistance provider fatalities increased even more.  

VIDEO: Saving lives just comes with the territory of being a firefighter — so if your life is in jeopardy who better to turn to? In this case: not only a firefighter but a best friend. For as long as just about anybody can remember, Kevin Barnwell and Devery Thomas have pretty much been joined at the hip. "We were friends before we could walk really," says Kevin. They played ball together, joined the fire service together and were the best men at each other's weddings. "I tell people that we are closer than most siblings," says Devery. "I don't think they have ever had an argument," adds Kevin's wife, Candi. Like most friendships, tests and trials have happened over the last couple of years. Kevin had a stroke that left him in a wheelchair, eventually, his kidneys started to fail which meant dialysis three times a week.
