Normal City Manager Pam Reece says that four firefighters for the Town of Normal have tested positive for COVID-19. "We had one employee that returned to work unknowingly and exposed his colleagues, so between him and a couple of his colleagues, there are four positives," she said. "Eleven others are being quarantined." No citizens or patients have been placed at risk, she added. Test results on the firefighters who were placed under quarantine should be available within a week. "This will not interrupt any service to our citizens," she said. "As people become more social, we want to remind them to be careful and follow CDC guidelines and limit group sizes and such. We want to remind them of the risk." It is the first known cases for first responders in the county. BLOOMINGTON-NORMAL PANTAGRAPH Lake Zurich fire officials continue to investigate the cause of an early morning blaze Sunday that severely damaged a home and left a pair of firefighters with minor injuries. Firefighters called to the home in the 21000 block of Highland Drive at 1:43 a.m. arrived to find heavy smoke and fire pouring through the roof of the structure. After confirming that the home's occupants had made it out, firefighters deployed multiple hose lines to extinguish the blaze, officials said. The home sustained heavy fire, smoke and water damage totaling about $300,000, according to the Lake Zurich Fire Department. The two firefighters who suffered injuries were treated and released, officials said. ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD Sheriff's deputies used a canine, drone and thermal imaging to search for a driver who fled the scene of a fiery rollover crash near Marengo late Friday evening. The McHenry County Sheriff's Office and Marengo Fire Protection District responded around 11:48 p.m. to the 8100 block of South Coral Road in unincorporated Marengo for a single-vehicle crash. A 2003 Chevy S-10 pickup truck was traveling southbound on South Coral Road, according to McHenry County Sheriff's Deputy Sandra Rogers. The Chevy drove off the roadway to the west and rolled over onto its roof before catching on fire. Gasoline leaked from the vehicle and caused the fire to fully engulf the truck. Sheriff's deputies and firefighters did not find anyone inside the Chevy and began an extensive search of the area. Rogers said that a canine unit, drone and thermal imaging technology was used in the three-hour search. CRYSTAL LAKE PATCH A firefighter was hospitalized and a family was displaced after an attic caught on fire in Evanston on Saturday. The Evanston Fire Department responded to a report of heavy smoke coming from the roof of a two-story single-family home in the 3200 block of Park Place at 4:41 p.m, according to a press release from the fire department. The first crew arrived within three minutes of dispatch to find smoke coming out of the home's attic, the fire department said. The fire was upgraded to a box alarm bringing in other communities to assist with the incident and weather related issues and it took several crews to contain and extinguish the fire with two working hose lines, according to the release. WMAQ-TV NBC 5 CHICAGO Fire swept through a Wheeling mobile home park Friday afternoon, destroying three homes, killing one pet and displacing three families. Firefighters were called to the Whipple Tree Village, 15 Brougham Drive, at 3:58 p.m. A Wheeling police officer on patrol also noticed smoke coming from a garage, firefighters said. When they arrived, firefighters found a mobile home engulfed in flames. The blazing wound up extending to two mobile homes flanking it. Firefighters said one dog perished in the fire, but all the families from the mobile homes were successfully evacuated. The fire was put out in 20 minutes, while another two hours were spent in overhaul operations and making sure the fire was completely out. ILLINOIS DAILY HERALD A fire Sunday night caused 16 people to be evacuated from a North Peoria apartment building. Smoking materials that were discarded inappropriately might have caused the blaze at 1614 W. Candletree Drive, according to a Peoria Fire Department preliminary investigation. Crews were called about 9:45 p.m. to the apartments, where they found smoke and flames on the outside rear of the building. Fire extended into the walls and up the side of the building to a second-story balcony, according to the department. It took firefighters about 10 minutes to bring the flames under control. Before they arrived, two people attempted to douse the fire by using hand-held extinguishers. The occupants of the apartment where the blaze originated were outside when firefighters arrived. More than a dozen sailors and several civilians have been hospitalized following an explosion on a Navy ship in San Diego on Sunday, officials said. A fire broke out aboard the USS Bonhomme Richard sometime around 8:30 a.m. local time, said officials with the Naval Surface Forces. The blaze escalated to a three-alarm fire, according to the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department, which assisted in battling the fire along with base and shipboard firefighting teams. Seventeen sailors, as well as four civilians, are being treated at a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, Mike Raney, a spokesman for the Naval Surface Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet, confirmed to ABC News Sunday afternoon. Several of the injuries were said to be serious while others were from smoke inhalation, officials said. ABC NEWS A fight for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder coverage years in the making has ended with a win for Cleveland paramedics, EMTs and dispatchers. A union contract for Cleveland EMS just passed, including about $3.7 million in back pay for employees and mental health language, addressing PTSD. CARE has been negotiating their contract since March of 2016. CARE Union president Paul Melhuish credits continued coverage of the issue from 19 Investigates with helping them achieve the new mental health and PTSD policy. In one of our stories, we profiled paramedics struggling with PTSD and mental health. Melhuish said Cleveland EMS may be among the first in the nation to have an outlined policy regarding mental health coverage specific to PTSD in their contract with the city. It is called "mental health trauma" in the contract. WOIO-TV CBS 19 CLEVELAND There are many statistics available regarding the COVID-19 pandemic, although they aren't necessarily well coordinated at the national level. With so many numbers being available, it can be difficult to understand what they mean, how they work together, and how to apply them. However, experts say a more unified, national approach is essential in getting the pandemic under control. An organization at Harvard University called Harvard Global Health Institute (HGHI) is attempting to solve this situation. On July 1, the institute released a set of tools, including an online risk-assessment map. This map makes it simpler to make apples-to-apples comparisons between local communities and visualize your actual risk level. According to Perry N. Halkitis, PhD, MS, MPH, dean of the Rutgers School of Public Health, "those countries who have been most effective in containing the virus have had unified approaches." HEALTHLINE San Antonio firefighters handled a crash of their own on Sunday. One of the department's fire trucks rolled down the street with no one inside and firefighters chased it down in hot pursuit. The incident happened on Stafford Street near Fire Station 5. A fire official said they'd parked the truck at New Braunfels and Stafford when the truck started rolling down Stafford. The truck rolled a whole block, crashing into a car and a telephone pole, and then kept going before it crashed into a fence and hit a house on the corner of Benton and Stafford. A fire official said SAFD is now investigating to find out what caused the truck to roll away. We've reached out to the fire department for more details and we'll bring more updates as they become available. KSAT-TV ABC 12 SAN ANTONIO VIDEO: Wildlife officers and firefighters managed to come up with a solution after a bear fell asleep in a tree after being tranquilized. Colorado Parks and Wildlife first responded to a home on Alameda Parkway and Bear Creek Road at 9 a.m. on Saturday for a call about a bear in a tree. Twelve hours later, the 350 lb. bear moved down the tree enough for officers to tranquilize it. That's when the hard work started. "One wildlife officer and one from West Metro Fire's technical rescue team climbed up the tree and put a harness around the bear, then built a rope system to safely lower it down," CPW said. Officers say by looking at the bear's teeth, they believe he is 15 years old. KCNC-TV CBS 4 DENVER |
