PHOTOS: A midnight house fire in Zion on Saturday caused $200,000 in damage and left a resident with minor smoke inhalation and a firefighter hospitalized with a minor arm injury, fire officials said. The Zion Fire & Rescue Department and Zion Police Department responded at 12:08 a.m. Saturday to the 3200 block of Gabriel Avenue in Zion for a report of a structure fire. Emergency responders arrived and found heavy fire coming from the garage and front windows of the two-story house, Zion Fire & Rescue Chief Justin Stried said. The fire was also threatening neighboring houses. Firefighters quickly deployed hose lines to douse the fire and to protect the homes on both sides of the house fire. The Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) was activated to the box alarm level, bringing in additional fire apparatus from departments in Lake and Kenosha counties.  

PHOTOS: Shortly after 9 p.m. on Sunday night, firefighters in Southeastern Illinois responded to a massive fire at Bond Lumber and Hardware in Norris City, Illinois. The fire spread through the entire building before it was brought under control. Initial reports suggest the fire started in the rear of the building near an office area. A final determination will take several days, but a fire investigator from the Illinois Office of the State Fire Marshal arrived shortly after midnight to begin investigating the cause. Firefighters from six counties across two states assisted in extinguishing the blaze. Ladder trucks from Fairfield City Fire Department and Harrisburg played a major role in cooling the fire as the State Fire Marshal arrived. Fairfield Rural Fire Department sent two tankers and an engine to the scene.  

A devastating seven-alarm fire in Paterson, New Jersey left families homeless and businesses destroyed Sunday morning. Residents said the fire at 195 Broadway started around midnight, but firefighters continued dousing the building with water well after the sun came up. Officials said the fire was severe and difficult to contain, and help was requested from several firefighting units across the area. "I was showering. I heard someone yelling, screaming, 'There's a fire! Call 911! We need water!'" a frightened neighbor told CBS New York. "I panicked, I let my kids know and we just ran out of there and left everything behind. We just lost everything, tried to start over, and it's like we lost everything again." The roof collapsed and tore down the second floor, leaving the building completely destroyed.

A man tried to help himself to a fire department's fuel supply last week. According to the Needham Community Fire Department, a pickup truck showed up at Station 81 (6822 E 350 N) at 5:13 a.m. on Thursday, May 30. The driver got out and tried to steal fuel from the fire station. "This individual decided to attempt to help himself to our mission critical fuel supply which we utilize for our fire trucks ensuring we can respond to your emergency when you need us," the department wrote on Facebook. The department clarified that the man was unable to get any fuel; a secondary locking mechanism prevented him from doing so. Fire personnel were not onsite and were instead at Station 82, the department noted.
