Officials say the cause of the fire was unintentional. The estimated damages are at least $120K. Investigators are working to determine the cause of a garage fire that broke out in a two-story home Sunday afternoon. It happened around 3:30 p.m. in the 6900 block of North Buckeye Drive, near the corner of West Sommer Place. No one was injured and the captain on scene said the homeowners were able to get their dog out of the home safely. Firefighters say the fire started on the left side of the home and had the potential to spread quickly, but luckily the main part of the house sustained only some minor smoke damage. "There is wood that's blocking the interior of the home - and second story - from the garage, so that was basically able to confine it right in. On top of the fact that our Engine 19 was here very quick," fire captain Tom Stimeling said. Crews stayed on scene to fan out parts of the house and investigate. WEEK-TV ABC/NBC/CW+ 25 PEORIA An electrical shortage sparked a structure fire that fire officials estimate caused about $45,000 worth of damage to a Moline business. The Moline Fire Department responded to a structure fire at 10:40 a.m. Friday at U.S. Golf Manufacturing at 1612 7th St. in Moline. Moline fire officials said the fire was likely caused by an electrical shortage at the back of the building. According to a press release, no injuries were reported and all occupants were able to exit the building on their own safely. Firefighters arrived to find light smoke and flames coming from an exterior wall at the back of the single-story building. "An immediate offensive attack was initiated that resulted in the fire being quickly extinguished," according to the release. THE DISPATCH ARGUS - METERED SITE During a recent fire in Cary, firefighters rescued nine cats from a building, and while they all survived, some had smoke inhalation and the Cary Fire Protection District had only one mask for them. It's one of the reasons Cary firefighter and ice cream shop owner Randy Scott, who also had a cat die from inhaling smoke during one of his first calls as a firefighter eight years ago, said he decided to donate three pet oxygen masks to the department. "I wanted to spread the word that this is a thing," said Scott, who owns three cats. "We want to show that the fire department cares about pets as well. Now, Cary has something to administer oxygen to dogs, cats or any animal in need." The masks will be kept in the fire district's ambulances, fire department officials said in a news release. DAILY HERALD - METERED SITE The Peoria Fire Department responded to a fire in a hotel near 501 Main Street at approximately 2:24 a.m. Saturday. According to a Peoria Fire press release, fire crews located smoke in the hotel's laundry room area and found that the fire was extinguished by an employee with a fire extinguisher and the building's automatic sprinkler system. Fire crews turned off the building's sprinkler system and helped ventilate the basement. Medical support was also provided to a hotel employee for smoke inhalation. The employee was transported to a local hospital for treatment. No other injuries have been reported. WMBD-TV CBS 30 PEORIA |

Five buildings were destroyed during a fire at a former cereal factory in Orange Saturday. According to State Fire Marshal's Spokesperson Jake Wark, crews were called to 16 West River Street at around 11:45 a.m. Saturday for reported smoke and flames at the vacant mill building. Four additional buildings were also on fire, including one on East River Street. On March 29th the old cereal factory building was considered a danger due to structural concerns. The fire department closed a section of West River Street to vehicles and pedestrians due to glass and brick falling out of the building onto the street. West River Street at the intersection of Route 122 remains closed, a detour will remain in place until further notice. Residents are asked to use caution in the area. WIVB-TV CBS 4 NEW YORK VIDEO: Dispatchers in Volusia County can now see an emergency in real time using a video 911 system the sheriff's office unveiled this week. Sheriff Mike Chitwood said they're just starting to use it and an incident on Thursday is a great example of when Volusia residents would need it. Witnesses driving on I-4 Thursday afternoon called 911 and took video of a minivan that was swerving into the shoulder, the other lane, and even the median. "The motorists actually slowed down to prevent any cars from going near him as they were calling 911 and filming it," said Chitwood. The sheriff said deputies arrested the driver on DUI charges, and witnesses sent their videos that they recorded to investigators afterward. "I want to use this as an opportunity to hammer home on a new technology that we just started using a week ago called Carbyne," he said. Assistant communications director Glenn Lopez said it starts with a typical 911 phone call and if it's an active situation, the dispatcher can engage a video call. WKMG-TV CBS 6 ORLANDO Indianapolis firefighters stopped a man with a knife who attacked them after chasing a woman into an east side fire station on Saturday. At around 1 p.m., a firefighter was backing his fire department vehicle into a bay at IFD Station 11, located at 1715 E. Washington Street near Southeastern and South State avenues, when a woman ran past the vehicle and into the station. According to IFD, the woman was in "obvious distress" and yelled that a man was chasing her. That's when the firefighter got out of his vehicle and saw a man running toward the station. The firefighter stepped in front of the man and told him to stop, but the man became aggressive and shoved the firefighter up against the vehicle, injuring him. The engine crew, who were in the kitchen cleaning up from lunch, heard the commotion in the bay and went to see what was going on. They found the man holding the woman with a knife clearly visible in his hand. WTHR-TV NBC 13 INDIANAPOLIS PHOTOS: Iterations of Last Chance, Clayton's fire boat, have been serving the north country for over 60 years, going where fire trucks can't go. As Clayton Fire Department treasurer and boat Capt. Justin Taylor boarded the boat recently, his pager went off, his phone sounded, and the fire whistle blared through the streets of Clayton. The department was requested to be on standby for an incident on Wellesley Island. Within minutes, seven Clayton firefighters arrived to the boat along with four emergency medical technicians from Thousand Islands Emergency Rescue Service, ready to respond to the scene. After a few minutes, the Clayton fire boat was disregarded and shortly after, the firefighters and EMTs began to disperse. NNY 360 - METERED SITE Nearly every American, the CDC says 97%, has some level of "forever chemicals" in their blood because they are found in so many household products. Now, scientists in Arvada are making it easier for you to test your levels at home. PFAS, or perfluoroalkyl substances, are commonly known as forever chemicals because they can build up in the body over time. Experts say they can cause a host of health problems, including cancer, reproductive issues and developmental effects. Scientists with EmpowerDX have developed a new, first of its kind, at-home test that allows you to test your PFAS blood levels with just a finger prick. The global laboratory company Eurofins analyzes the samples you take at home and uploads your results to a private online portal. Scientists at a Eurofins lab in Arvada have been studying PFAS closely. KCNC-TV CBS 4 DENVER |
