First Female Fire Chief In Lake County Retires After 30 Years North Chicago's fire chief, who is one of only two female fire chiefs in Illinois, announced her retirement after nearly 30 years of service. The public is invited to attend her walk-out ceremony. North Chicago Fire Chief Dell Urban's last day will be June 11, according to the City of North Chicago. The City of North Chicago said that Urban has been a pioneer for women in the firefighting and EMS profession. Urban was the first female firefighter in the history of the North Chicago Fire Department when she was hired. She previously worked as a firefighter for the Newport Township Fire Protection District. DEERFIELD PATCH Chicago Firefighters Extinguish Extra-Alarm Fire In Brighton Park; 15 Displaced Firefighters extinguished an extra-alarm fire that damaged two buildings Saturday evening in the Brighton Park neighborhood. Chicago Fire Department officials said flames were coming from the rear porch on the first floor of a two-story home at 3402 S. Western Av., and had spread to a neighboring building. A 2-11 response was called for the blaze, bringing in extra crews and equipment to contain the flames. Officials said the fire was extinguished around 7:20 p.m., although crews remained on the scene to keep an eye on hot spots. No injuries were reported, but 15 people were displaced. WBBM-TV CBS 2 CHICAGO Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey, Deputy Chief Jeff Carey Receive JTHS Superintendent Medallion For West COVID Clinic Joliet Fire Chief Greg Blaskey and Deputy Chief Jeff Carey received the 2021 Joliet Township High School Superintendent Medallion at the May Board of Education meeting for their leadership in implementing the COVID vaccine clinic at Joliet West High School. The award was presented by Superintendent Dr. Karla Guseman. Chief Blaskey and Deputy Chief Carey are alumni of the high school district, with Blaskey graduating from Joliet West High School in 1981 and Carey graduating from Joliet Central High School in 1993. The history of the clinic's establishment at West is one of a community coming together in a time of need. Will County was hit especially hard by the pandemic with more than 1,000 deaths. With high case counts in the community, the impact on education has been hard families with the last "regular" school day in March of 2020 and the majority of learning taking place online since then. WJOL-AM 1340 JOLIET Williamsfield Fire District receives grant from Ameren Illinois An area volunteer fire department got a new piece of equipment thanks to a grant from Ameren Illinois. The Williamsfield Fire Protection District received a $5,000 grant from the energy provider to purchase a fire-medical skid unit to help out when responding to an emergency call where the terrain could be difficult to maneuver. The unit, placed in the back of the recently donated Utility Terrain Vehicle, consists of a water tank, motor, and pump for water discharge, as well as a platform to attach a basket stretcher. This could assist firefighters in performing lifesaving missions with greater ease. "In the past, volunteer firefighters would walk carrying hand-tools to fight fires in remote areas since no water was available," said Bruce Bush, Assistant Fire Chief, Williamsfield Fire Protection District. WGIL-AM GALEBURG RADIO 1400 AM Ground broken for new Barrington Fire District station Barrington Countryside Fire Protection District broke ground in late May for a new Fire Station 39 -- the district's third fire station -- at 1004 S. Hough St. in an unincorporated area near the village. Fire Station 39, at a cost of $5 million, will be the district's third fire station. Officials said it will allow the district to respond to more than 90% of all emergency calls in six minutes or less. "Today is a very exciting and important day; one that is seven years in the making," Fire Chief Jim Kreher said. The station is slated to be funded by reserves, though there has been some discussion about possibly financing a portion of the project -- all without a tax rate increase, officials said. The station also will help reduce insurance premiums for some property owners, particularly in the eastern section of the district, officials said. Massive recycling yard fire in Arizona triggers 'largest response' in fire department's history VIDEO/PHOTOS: Phoenix fire officials say a sixth alarm fire at a recycling yard near 35th Avenue and Buckeye prompted the largest response in the department's history on June 5. "I can't remember the last time we had a sixth alarm," said Phoenix Fire Captain Todd Keller. "We've had a couple two, three alarms in the last couple of months, but this is a big one." The fire was originally a first alarm early Saturday afternoon, but it quickly escalated, maxing out the alarm system and triggering the type of response that would normally only be seen with wildfires. Residents say that the smoke could be seen from as far as Mesa and Ahwatukee. Meanwhile, fire officials say 150 residential and commercial customers were without power for about 10 hours. KSAZ-TV FOX 10 PHOENIX Related YouTube Video: Large recycling yard fire burns in Phoenix New tech helps California firefighters navigate through burning buildings faster, safer Firefighters with the Menlo Park Fire Protection District have new technology that helps them navigate through burning buildings and find people twice as fast, according to the Fire Chief. The technology is called the C-Thru platform. It includes a navigation unit that attaches to the firefighter's helmet and allows them to clearly see objects in a burning building. Made by San Francisco based startup, Qwake Technologies, the C-Thru navigator uses thermal imaging technology to help firefighters identify objects in their path, retrace their steps to find exits and communicate with other firefighters. The Menlo Park Fire Protection District is the first in the nation to use the new technology. Fire Chief Harold Schapelhouman said they signed a contract on Friday to purchase units for each of their 40 front-line firefighters, for a total of $210,000. Gideon and Josiah Trank, ages eight and seven, have raised hundreds of dollars for first responders with their front yard lemonade stand. Friday, they rented the Cocky's Bagels food truck for the Brooklyn police and fire departments with their earnings. The truck parked outside of the police station between 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. and served up bagel sandwiches and other treats with the brothers behind the counter taking orders. "We love our heroes," Gideon said. "We're doing this because they're probably hungry." That love for first responders was instilled in them by their parents, Machelle and Avery Trank.
