Deadly Chicago fire intentionally set, family claims; 10-year-old girl, mother killed A 10-year-old girl and her mother are dead after an early morning house fire in Gresham Sunday. Four others were also hospitalized in the aftermath, according to officials. Among those hospitalized are the mother's boyfriend and two cousins. All of them are expected to recover from their injuries as both the fire and police departments continue to investigate the cause of a fire that family members believe was anything but accidental. "How could they both go at the same time," said cousin Darryl Fields. Police responded to a fire at a single-family home in the 8600-block of South Hermitage. A young girl and a woman were taken to Little Company of Mary Hospital where they were both pronounced dead, according to the Chicago Fire Department. "I don't know what to do. I lost my momma and my sister. That's my only sister," said Tieashia Stinson, the victims' daughter and sister. The loss is a devastating one. Relatives identified the victims as Ieashia Ford and her 10-year-old daughter Porsche. WLS-TV ABC 7 CHICAGO Urbana Fire Deemed 'Suspicious' "As of right now, we are deeming this fire suspicious," Champaign County Lieutenant Curt Apperson tells WAND News regarding a structure fire in North Urbana Saturday Morning. The call came in at 8:30 A.M. Saturday for a fire at 2402 Olympian Rd when two pedestrians walking down Olympian Road called 911. Carroll Fire Protection Chief James Green says they arrived to three sheds on fire. "We came out here and this is what we found, not sure what started it or anything, it's all under investigation, nobody hurt, just some damage to the building damage to the equipment and thats about it." Green says he believes the sheds and equipment are a total loss. Lt. Apperson says the State Fire Marshal has been called to investigate the fire. No one lives at the location, but Apperson tells WAND News there seemed to be forced entry into the home. According to Apperson, the inside of the home was damaged, but police are unsure if the damage was there before the incident. "Three sheds were on fire and some equipment. We saw damage to a grain bin as well as two tractors. We think it's a total loss." Apperson says. Fire department investigating cause of large warehouse fire in Texas VIDEO: Multiple firefighter units and HAZMAT crews responded to a four-alarm fire at a warehouse on Saturday afternoon along SH-249 and the Beltway near Tomball. It started at about 5:30 p.m. in the 62000 block of Tomball Parkway (SH-249) and lasted throughout the night. Investigators are still unclear of the cause. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. The Harris County Fire Marshal's Office confirmed the building had been vacant for two years. It's currently owned by IQ Products Company, which supplies household, automotive and personal care products. The fire happened on the storage side of the building where they keep the finished products. Drivers passing the scene shared video with KHOU 11, showing heavy flames and large plumes of black smoke engulfing the building. "And then you could start hearing aerosol cans popping off. Bam. Bam. Bam. We were safe at the distance we were at and then after a while, police came.' KHOU-TV CBS 11 HOUSTON Police: Connecticut ambulance employee arrested in string of Molotov cocktail attacks A Connecticut ambulance company employee was arrested and charged in a string of Molotov cocktail attacks across the state that targeted two emergency medical services agencies, a volunteer fire department and a private residence on the same day, authorities said. Richard White, 37, of Torrington, Connecticut, was arrested around 10 p.m. on Saturday by Pennsylvania State Police troopers who stopped his car on Interstate 80 near Milton, Pennsylvania, officials said. An arrest warrant was issued for White on Saturday night, charging him with third-degree arson and third-degree burglary. He is being held in Pennsylvania on a $150,000 bond and is awaiting extradition back to Old Saybrook, Connecticut, Old Saybrook Police Chief Michael A. Spera told ABC News on Sunday. ABC NEWS North Carolina fire department's dual driver ladder truck maneuvers through tight spots, features tall ladder PHOTOS: Asheville Fire Department's dual driver ladder truck is a tiller truck or a tractor drawn aerial (TDA). This hook-and-ladder truck features a specialized turntable ladder mounted on a semi-trailer truck. Ladder 1 was purchased for $1.2 million back in 2019. It runs out of the downtown station and responds to more than 2,800 calls per year. Maybe you are wondering why the Asheville Fire Department chose to purchase this type of truck versus a standard ladder truck. This type of ladder truck allows AFD firefighters to more safely maneuver through the narrow streets and challenging terrain of downtown Asheville. These types of trucks are designed with increased maneuverability with shorter wheelbases and impressive turning radius. The tractor drawn aerial truck responds to fires, rescues, car wrecks and EMS calls. Its ladder extends to 103 feet. THE CITY OF ASHEVILLE University of Kansas researchers answer call to improve sleep for firefighters to boost performance and safety A team of investigators at the University of Kansas is collecting data and designing interventions to improve the quality of sleep for firefighters and paramedics in the Lawrence Douglas County Fire-Medical Department. For these first responders, better sleep could improve their quality of life and boost their performance as they encounter life-and-death situations. The stressful work of responding to emergencies demands both physical stamina and quick decision making. "Among the many responsibilities of their job, our EMTs and paramedics have to make drug calculations regardless of the time of day or night or situation, so sleep deprivation is a concern," said Kevin Joles, division chief with LDCFM. "If somebody is sleep deprived and distracted when throwing a ladder against a house and they hit a power line, it could kill them or another firefighter." MEDICAL EXPRESS A Brief History of COVID, 1 Year In On February 20, 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) announced that the first person in the United States had died from COVID-19 — a man in his fifties living in Washington state. Since then, close to 28 million Americans have been infected with the novel (new) coronavirus, officially known as SARS-CoV-2, according to the latest data from Johns Hopkins University. Nearly half a million have died, more than in any other country in the world. The year has been one of unspeakable tragedy, but also hope with the arrival of the first COVID-19 vaccines. The development of these highly effective vaccines is "a great scientific tour de force," according to Thomas Russo, MD, chief of infectious disease at the University of Buffalo Jacobs School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in New York. Here's a look back at the most significant U.S. milestones in the pandemic's first year, where we stand now, and the challenges ahead. EVERYDAY HEALTH PREVIOUS NATIONAL NEWS |
